Leonard Joel is a well-known and respected auction house dealing in Fine Art, Jewels, Decorative Arts and Private Collections. We are seeking a positive and motivated individual to manage our Furniture department. This department forms part of Leonard Joel's regular Thursday Auction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage the Furniture auction and ensure adequate consistent stock so that budgeted hammers are met
- Good level of physical fitness and the ability to adopt safe handling practices for moving, assembling and merchandising furniture for auction
- Provide excellent customer service, field incoming telephone and email enquiries and engage with clients on the sale room floor.
- Maintaining key relationships with existing buyers & vendors
- Conveying new business & single owner enquiries back to Head of Department
- In conjunction with staff accountable to the department, ensure that all clients receive a copy of their inventory report/consignment note and Key Points of General Conditions of Business for their consigned goods prior to auction
- Oversee management of delivery bookings
- Identification, appraisal, consignment and allocation of goods for auction
- Completing online valuations in a timely fashion
- Estimate reductions for unsold lots and manage post sale offers
- Monitor all storage facilities and maintain updated inventory of items in storage
- Ensure the safe handling of clients’ property pre and post auction
- In conjunction with staff accountable to the department, ensure that return goods to clients or items deemed unsaleable are documented with the appropriate paperwork
- Computer literacy
- Availability to work regular evening viewings as well as occasional weekends

- Sales and Customer Service
- IT systems to support auction processes (i.e. database, website administration etc.)
- Exposure to auction environment
- Time management and organisational skills
- Valuation experience across a broad range of categories
- Auctioneering, where required
- Generalist knowledge across a broad range of products/categories
- Broad valuation knowledge
