Detail information about job Academic and Specialist Editors (Online). Terms and conditions vacancy

  • Among the highest rates of pay in the industry
  • Flexible hours and regular, ongoing work
  • Work from anywhere

Capstone Editing provides industry-leading academic editing, servicing the needs of universities, publishers, academics and postgraduate students. Underpinning every aspect of our business is our desire to provide the highest-quality editing possible.

We are currently accepting applications from qualified and experienced editors to join our team. We are based in Canberra, but our editors can be located anywhere.

We want to let you know upfront that Capstone Editing is different. We are a family business (run by three families) and we love what we do. Our staff and editors are not only long-term team members, but also part of our family. We are looking for editors who are truly passionate about what they do, committed to always improving because they love to learn, really believe that this job would be perfect for them, and want editing to be their career (rather than a job they think is convenient for now or that they can do on the side, while they are really committed to something else). If this is you, please let us know!

Selection criteria

To apply to work with us, you must meet the following minimum selection criteria:

  • be a native English speaker
  • hold a PhD or an editing-specific postgraduate qualification
  • possess experience editing documents at a tertiary level
  • be familiar with the expectations and conventions of academic documents in the Australian tertiary sector
  • have a proven ability to meet tight deadlines and manage time effectively
  • be exceptionally self-motivated and possess excellent organisational skills
  • be willing and enthusiastic about completing our training course and ongoing professional development program
  • be able to commit to working with us for a minimum of two years and preferably longer (due to the worth of our training program)
  • possess advanced skills in Microsoft Word 2010 or above including the use of Track Changes and styles (on a computer that runs Windows).

The following is also desirable:

  • accreditation with the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd)
  • employment experience specifically as an academic editor
  • the ability to troubleshoot bugs and manage complex documents in Word
  • a strong record of academic publication
  • the ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.

Other specialist editors

This hiring round we are also seeking medical and scientific editors, and editors with experience in Christian editing and publishing. Editors with this type of experience are not required to hold a PhD.

Benefits

The many benefits of working with Capstone Editing include:

  • among the highest rates of pay in the industry
  • flexible hours and stable, ongoing work, without the need to market your services
  • the ability to work from anywhere
  • excellent working conditions within a friendly and supportive team
  • focus on editing, not admin, as our staff handle all client support
  • ongoing training and professional development.

Hours and availability

Editors can specify the approximate number of hours they wish to work per week and select the documents they edit on a job-by-job basis. This hiring round, we are specifically looking to hire editors who are available to work the equivalent of full-time hours. We will only consider editors who are available the equivalent of part-time hours if they are exceptionally experienced and qualified, and will thus require less training. We will only accept applications from editors who can work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Further information

Our editors are paid per document based on word count, turnaround time and the level of editing performed. We will provide our specific rates of pay to suitable applicants upon receiving an expression of interest.

Editors are hired by Capstone Editing as contractors. This means you need to hold an Australian Business Number (ABN) and declare your own income to the Australian Taxation Office. You can apply for an ABN online at https://abr.gov.au/For-Business,-Super-funds---Charities/Applying-for-an-ABN/

Application procedure

To apply, you must email your 1) cover letter, 2) response to the selection criteria above and 3) CV to [email protected]. Applications should be addressed to Dr Lisa Lines, Director and Head Editor. Applicants may be asked to provide copies of their academic transcripts.

To complete your application, you will be sent a one-page editing test to perform.

Short-listed applicants will be contacted by email and asked to edit a short series of test documents to demonstrate their abilities prior to moving forward to the interview stage.
