POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title:                     Communications Officer

Department:                       Media, Communications

Location:                            East Melbourne

Employment Status:          Full time – 38 hours per week

Reports to:                         Director, Media and Communications

POSITION PURPOSE

The Media and Communications Office is a department of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne (CAM).  The Office publishes Melbourne Catholic Magazine and otherwise provides outward communication for the Archdiocese.  As a Communications Officer you will be responsible for the CAM website and all areas of social media, along with assisting the Director with content for internal communications. You will also be called upon to help strengthen public relations and to assist in increasing positive news coverage across all media for Catholic organisations in Melbourne.

ORGANISATIONAL DESCRIPTION

The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne (CAM) is one of the largest Dioceses in the world with a wide variety of people, cultures and ministries, providing services and support to 210 parishes and over 332 schools through pastoral, education, social welfare and administrative support.

The Archdiocese of Melbourne is presided by the Archbishop of Melbourne, the role of CAM is to assist the Archbishop in serving the people of God within the defined territory.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  1. Under direction, implement the strategy for the Archdiocesan application of social media to promote the mission of the Church, including streamlining and building upon existing social media platforms and introducing innovations.
  2. Prepare the weekly Parish Update and CAM News, and assist the Director to maximise their respective readerships.
  3. Liaise closely with the Editor, Publications and the team of journalists to identify leads to relevant stories for publication in Melbourne Catholic Magazine, on the website and via social media.
  4. Produce video news stories relating to events and people of interest.
  5. Assist the Director in promoting Archdiocesan initiatives and events through Catholic channels and the broader media.
  6. Assist the Director in other aspects of communications and public relations, as required.
  7. Take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves, fellow staff and others in the workplace.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. Relevant experience in the following areas: social media, website application and development, video production.
  2. Demonstrated experience in successfully implementing a social media strategy. 
  3. Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  4. Ability to manage specific assignments and tasks simultaneously and work to deadlines.
  5. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  6. Energetic and highly motivated with initiative and capacity to work in a team environment but also work with a minimum of supervision.

JOB COMPETENCIES

  • Degree qualifications in social media, communications or a related discipline.
  • A driver licence is required.
  • National Police record check (essential).
  • Working with Children Check (essential).

  • Sound time-management skills and ability to prioritise.
  • Excellent verbal and written, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High level of attention to detail, quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to multi-task and work quickly and efficiently.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across departments, agencies, ministries and parishes of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.
