Chandler Macleod has partnered with a leading university for the engagement of a Linux Systems Engineer on a two year fixed term contract. Information technology is a key enabler to the achievement of the University strategic objectives. The Information Technology (Infrastructure) group manages the underpinning enterprise infrastructure including network, storage, server, security and identity management. The position is in the Server Systems Support team who manage all Windows, Unix and server virtualisation technologies. The position works closely with other Windows, Unix and Virtualisation System Administrators and System Engineers to provide responsive and highly available infrastructure services. The position will provide expert advice, implement, monitor and provide system administration of server infrastructure to ensure performance; availability and security targets are met.

The Responsibilities
• Develop standards and procedures for corporate server systems and sub systems for system administrators, operations and administrative staff and assist in developing policies.
• Monitor and maintain integrity of the corporate server systems and sub systems in accordance with documented standards.
• Provide system management and administration of the University computer systems for which the Division of Information Systems is responsible. Ensure that these systems are operating securely, efficiently and are effectively supporting user requirements.
• Assist in the planning of future technology and IT needs for the University, by monitoring developments in software and hardware, conducting evaluations and providing advice to stakeholders on how they can be used to improve systems and service.
• Develop, install and maintain new systems and software as required. Assist in the development of new systems that conform to current ICTS standards and methodology.
• Lead or participate in project teams to develop and install new systems and software as required in line with current standards and methodology.
• Consult with and provide support and expert advice to University Information Services Division and client service groups in all aspects of corporate server use, server operating systems and applications.

The Requirements
• Tertiary qualifications with subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent combination of qualifications and/or experience.
• Demonstrated substantial experience in the administration and deployment of Redhat and/or Solaris operating systems. Experience will include monitoring, security, performance tuning, networking and using SAN and NAS storage systems.
• Demonstrated experience in the use of management, monitoring and performance monitoring tools such as Nagios, Cacti, Satellite and/or Puppet.
• Demonstrated experience in the use of server virtualization technologies including VMWare.
• Demonstrated experience with systems programming and scripting for automation and system management.
• Well-developed verbal and written communication skills along with a commitment to the delivery of excellent client service.
• Knowledge and experience in ITIL. (Desirable)
• Knowledge in project management frameworks and ability to lead small projects. (Desirable)
