The Role
 
The Senior Apps DBA is accountable for the maintenance, integrity, security and availability of multiple databases within the department's application portfolio. This includes disaster recovery, performance analysis and tuning, index maintenance, and monitoring of data. Your role will ensure that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to company standards.

Your role administers, maintains, develops and implements policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the database. In addition, you will evaluate and recommend strategic solutions with a view to consolidate, simplify and reduce the operational overhead of the department's landscape. You will leverage third party providers to consult and execute operational and project delivery activity, but will remain accountable for the quality of delivery into the business.

In addition your key accountabilities:
  • Is the operational management and technical leadership of database solutions within the department's IT portfolio
  • To be the point of contact for escalated higher level issues and ownership of all DBA projects. Ensure the integrity, security, performance and availability of databases
  • To performs database and software life-cycle activities to ensure highest level of system performance and availability and compliance with business requirements
  • To monitor database(s) for compliance with established standards, policies, configuration guidelines and procedures
  • To provide capacity analysis reports/data and recommendations for improvements
  • To complete advanced troubleshooting (ability to think outside of box) and advanced shell scripting for all databases involving Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and timeseries DB solutions (preferred)
  • Application performance management expertise and coordination to ensure application performance issues are identified, understood and where possible, remediated via the implementation of SQL tuning or platform optimisation
  • The execution or coordination of new installations, upgrades, strategic analysis, and act as technical point of contact for major issues for the department's IT database environments

You will have:
  • Commercial experience managing a portfolio of mixed technology databases in a medium to large organisation
  • Cross-functional experience working with or within a DevOps or application team
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across the enterprise
  • Diverse database platform experience across Intel, Sparc, converged and cloud infrastructure
  • Database migration / consolidation experience to create a database service;
  • Proficiency in system design & architecture
  • Experience working in a blended agile / waterfall organisation
  • Business or IT Degree or similar
  • At least 5 years' experience in operational database management within a large / complex organisation
  • Certified or relevant training in managing Oracle DB (11/12) and SQL Server (2012, 2014, 2016)
  • At least 5 years managing platform availability in a high-transactional and preferably regulated industry
  • This role will be the subject matter expert across Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and timeseries DB solutions such as Osisoft Pi
Preferred experience:
  • Strong knowledge of the Dev Ops tool chain on Linux / Windows platforms; Jenkins / Bamboo, Bitbucket, Python / C++ / Java, Ansible, Puppet, Confluence, Git, chocolaty, cloud formation, etc
  • Experience with enterprise integration utilising a recognised technology platform / framework; using message-oriented middleware (e.g. Solace, Websphere MQ, ActiveMQ
