The Melbourne Institute: Applied Economic & Social Research is Australia’s pre-eminent economic and social policy research department that sits within the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Business and Economics. The Melbourne Institute undertakes high quality, independent and impartial applied research, and contributes to the development of public policy in Australia. The Institute provides high calibre research to government, business and community groups. The work of the institute involves housing, creating, transforming, data that are developed under a range of methods and that require the use of a range of security and monitoring protocols (from low to high security).      

About the role

The key role of the Data Operations Engineer & Analyst is to manage database systems, to work with researchers on their data storage and access requirements, and to monitor and ensure information security compliance of the Melbourne Institute. This role is required to work closely with database managers and research staff at the Melbourne Institute. 

Your role will include administration of data and research platforms, and the development and continuous improvement of data processing tools and procedures. You will also provide data support in the preparation of research-ready data files, data analysis of a range of data sources, and technical support to researchers at the Melbourne Institute.

About you

  • Substantial background in DevOps, Data Engineering, Data Management, System/Data Administration, or large, complex, economic or social data
  • High level proficiency and programming experience in multiple statistical packages (such as Stata, R, SPSS, SAS), familiarity with relational or document based database packages, and advanced batch or powershell scripting skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and verbal communication skills with the ability to liaise and work effectively with a range of people across all levels
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with considerable independence, and as part of a research team
  • High level problem solving skills with the ability to exercise judgement and initiative
  • Ideally have a strong understanding of quantitative research and experience working with complex longitudinal survey or administrative data

A police check is a requirement of the appointment. A baseline Australian Government Security Clearance is required after appointment.
