The Role
This role is challenging, interesting and integral to the service we provide to our clients via the SOE team. As part of the ACT Shared Services team, this role is responsible for a range of activities, primarily related to ensuring the environment is well maintained, well monitored, and quickly remedied when required.
 
This includes responsibility for maintaining the Standard Operating Environments and packaged applications in use in a number of government client environments. The SOE Engineer is responsible for the timely action of customer service requests, within the agreed service level agreement (SLA) whilst maintaining accurate and timely updates to technical documentation and ticket notes.
 
The core objectives and responsibilities of the SOE Engineer include:
  • Establish a standard, stable and robust operating system deployment and management environment
  • Maintain the desktop SOE and integrate applications into the environment
  • Development and maintenance of Microsoft Server and Desktop SOE
  • Undertake problem diagnoses, correction and escalated support of SOE technologies across customer environments
  • Monitor new releases and patches to operating systems and applications, and make recommendations on implementation and testing strategies
  • Develop IT standards and procedures and other documentation required to support the desktop
  • environment
 
The Person
Whilst qualifications in IT are highly regarded, it is industry experience (3 years+) that is most critical in ensuring success in this role. A strong sense of independence, technical knowledge and excellent communication skills are essential to be successful in this role.
 
We are looking for someone who can work both independently on competing priorities and as part of a team – someone who is passionate about his or her work, proactive, client-focused and believes in customer service as a point of differentiation in a service offering.
 
The incumbent will work within a team of Windows Systems Engineers to ensure SOE alignment across all platforms and assist in the planning and implementation of a desktop SOE based on the agreed business needs. This includes providing second and third level operational support for the SOE and the management and support tools that are developed and used internally.
 
 
Knowledge and Skills
The ideal candidate is someone with knowledge and skills in the following:
  • Demonstrated experience in the planning, implementation, management, configuration and maintenance of SOE management frameworks and associated server technologies
  • Well-developed systems/desktop administration/management skills of the preferred operating system
  • Advanced understanding of integration to Microsoft technologies, and the virtualisation of the preferred operating system onto Microsoft platforms
  • Experience in writing policies and procedures and other support documentation
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to prepare professional documentation for various audiences and interact with and advise stakeholders
