Detail information about job Web Developer. Terms and conditions vacancy

We're looking for a Web Developer to join the FastMail design team in our Melbourne office. Come work on the original social media platform - email - at a place that puts the customer's needs at the heart of the business.

When the vast majority of people get email for free, the reason people choose a paid service is because we give them a great experience. That's where you come in!

About the Job

FastMail is growing, and so are the number of web elements we handle. Our Design and Interface team needs a new member, focused on building high quality web elements quickly - whether they’re static pages, email messages, or UI tweaks. Most of your time will be spent evolving our marketing websites and related assets, translating our ideas for customer communications into actual code to produce visual elements on our product websites.

Like all online services, our customers are accessing our site, email and app on devices of all types and sizes. We’re seeking a developer who's experienced with progressive, responsive, mobile-friendly, standards-compliant, accessible site design — and building pages in such a way that they can be edited and maintained easily by other people.

You’ll work closely with our talented graphic designer and in consultation with our product UI developers to bridge the gap between design and technical implementation, taking an active role on both sides and defining how the websites will look as well as how they work. Your aim is to give our visitors and customers a cohesive experience that is centered on speed, ease of use, intuitive tooling, and interactions that are considerate of users of all levels of expertise. You will receive work from our Marketing, Product and Support teams.

About You

For this position, we are seeking someone:

  • highly experienced with HTML/CSS and design frameworks, able to build, modify and style elements on a page with ease
  • highly experienced with building progressive, responsive, standards-compliant, accessible, mobile-friendly designs
  • enthusiastic about ensuring customers have a great experience on any device
  • experienced with version control/git
  • experienced with Javascript
  • experienced implementing HTML email
  • who manages multiple projects easily
  • has excellent organisational skills
  • has an understanding of the special considerations required for all major browsers
  • who is comfortable communicating technical issues with non-technical users.

The ideal candidate has experience with two or more of the following:

  • Photoshop/Illustrator/Sketch
  • user testing
  • setting up and analyzing web A/B tests
  • web conversion tracking
  • web accessibility
  • experience with animated elements (within web pages or UI)

While this role is primarily focused on developing static content, enough comfort and familiarity with Javascript to make edits to user interfaces is a strong plus.

You are good at reviewing your past work, and spotting places to make enhancements — you know sites are never done, just between updates. You should have an enthusiasm and empathy for people, and want your work to help them. You should be able to communicate issues with kindness, and know that feedback is an opportunity for us all to improve.

Working at FastMail

If you come and work with us, you'll be working at our office in Melbourne, VIC, right in the heart of the CBD.

Like everyone on our team, you'll get good benefits (such as paid parental leave) and 4 weeks annual leave. We'll set you up with equipment, books, and whatever else you need to do your job comfortably.

Our second office is in Philadelphia, in the United States, and we're in close communication with them. Because of the time difference, this means a lot of email, a fair bit of Slack chat, and occasional video chats. This means that sometimes you need to be available outside normal business hours for a team meeting. Yes, you may go to the US at some point, too!

This as a full-time role with a high face-to-face communication component, so you'll be required to spend most of your work-time physically present in our Melbourne office. There's flexibility in that though - we are partners, parents and carers ourselves, and we understand time-zone flexibility goes in both directions. Talk to us if you're unsure.

We encourage employees to write and speak about the great work we do, and we value people who are enthusiastic to learn and improve their skills -- and we give them a conference budget to do so. Many staffers write articles on our blog, and we hope you will, too. Several staff members are regular conference speakers.

You can read about our values, and our blog contains interviews with some of the people who will become your colleagues at FastMail.

We welcome all applicants regardless of race, colour, religion, age, pregnancy, gender identity or expression, disability, or sexual orientation.

About the only thing we can't help with is visas or sponsorship. You must already have the right to work in Australia.

Sounds great, what's next?

Email us at [email protected] to introduce yourself and tell us why you would be a good fit for the job! Include a PDF of your resume, and links to your portfolio or sample work.
