The team

The Senior Security Advisor works as part of the Security Operations, Risk & Advisory Team and reports in to the Team Leader of Security Advisory. The team is responsible for the continuous improvement of Xero’s security culture and capabilities, which is an integral part of the ongoing success that is Xero.

What you’ll do

With a particular focus on our product teams you will work closely with stakeholders to educate on security risk, you will;

• Support Product teams in identifying risk for new features, utilising techniques such as threat modelling.
• Develop strong relationships with Xero teams to understand their unique risk profiles, knowledge and capabilities; and drive development of security content that helps improve teams’ risk awareness and increase their capability to self-assess and manage their risk.
• Work with the wider Security team to improve the security capability of Product teams; provide guidance and support to empower them to take ownership of the security of their product stack
• Communicate, educate and help to implement security policies and design patterns.
• Grow and support security communities across Xero.
• Help to make the security team a trusted partner for other technical teams, by providing timely and constructive advice to Product teams and the wider business.
• Help to foster a culture of security across Xero, with particular emphasis on the Product teams.

What you’ll bring to the role

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with a variety of individuals at different levels
• Excellent stakeholder management
• Ability to juggle many tasks and projects in a fast-moving environment
• Ability to work independently with minimal direction
• A drive to take ownership of problems and solve them
• Creates a collaborative environment and empowers others.
• An innovative and positive team player with a “can do” attitude
• Has initiative and a passion for all things security and a willingness to go the extra mile
• Ability to communicate technical topics to laypersons
• Comfortable speaking to large groups
• 3 or more years working in the information security field
• Working knowledge of web applications, common web application vulnerabilities and secure design patterns
• Working knowledge of secure development processes in an Agile/DevOps environment
• Good grasp of modern software development practices and lifecycle
• Experience of working with software development and/or other teams using Lean-Agile techniques
• Familiarity with AWS or other cloud environments
• Experience creating security awareness content and training
