This is an exciting opportunity to join the Costume Workshop of The Australian Ballet in the role of full time Costumier, responsible for both sewing new costumes and refurbishing existing costumes on time, on budget, and to the high standards The Australian Ballet is renowned for.. 

This is a non-touring position, although interstate travel may be required. 

The Australian Ballet is one of the world’s leading national ballet companies and a globally recognised Australian major performing arts organisation.  Each year the company presents upwards of 220 performances through its main stage seasons in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth; along with public programs, special events, an extensive regional tour, a Children’s Ballet and Education programs and regular overseas tours. 

Orchestra Victoria (OV), provides pit services for ballet and opera in Victoria, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Australian Ballet. The Australian Ballet and Orchestra Victoria and employ over 265 staff.

SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Construction of new and refurbishment of existing costumes including, but not limited to –

  • Constructing costumes under the supervision and direction of the Ladies and Gentleman’s Cutters, from design to completion
  • Fabric preparation
  • Machine sewing
  • Ironing
  • Trimming and hand sewing
  • Preparing costumes for fittings
  • Minor and major repairs and alterations 

Other duties -

  • Assisting with costume rehearsals
  • Assisting with fittings when required
  • At times, assisting with the supervision of work experience and secondment students
  • Undertaking any other duties as reasonably requested by the Head of Costume workshop, Ladies and/or Gentlemen's Cutters

Preferred Qualifications, Experience and Attributes

  • Experience in costume construction
  • Experience in costume maintenance
  • Ability to use industrial sewing machinery
  • Ironing skills
  • Fabric knowledge
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Appreciation of the artistic temperament of a ballet dancer and their performance demands
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Attention to detail
  • Satisfactory Police Records check – arranged by The Australian Ballet upon appointment
