Tasracing is responsible for the development of racing and breeding, the funding of clubs as well as providing stakes, media rights and managing racing venues. Tasracing provides a commercially viable future for racing in Tasmania by promoting and distributing data on racing form, track conditions and by assisting racing clubs to promote their racing events and carnivals.

We have a 4-month fixed term opportunity for a delivery-focussed professional to join our Senior Leadership Team as the Operations Manager- Racing, with the potential for extension. 

Reporting directly to the Interim Chief Executive Officer and based in Glenorchy, Hobart, the Operations Manager- Racing will be responsible for the effective management of racing and training operations at all Tasracing venues across the State, to support and enhance the race day experience for the Tasmanian racing industry.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the race day operations, turf management, contractor management and the proactive implementation of contemporary health and safety procedures and policies. 

Key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Managing all racing and training operational staff across the State, promoting a culture of accountability, communication and team work;
  • Ensuring a high level of track management across all codes at all venues;
  • Overseeing appropriate rostering of race day staff at all racing events;
  • Leading internal racing operations by providing direction and guidance to achieve organisational performance targets;
  • Liaising with the Assets & Facilities team to oversee contractors and venue maintenance efforts;
  • Preparing and analysing financial budgeting and reporting obligations relating to racing operations within Tasracing, including the ability to present and report to Executive Management;
  • Maintaining fair, ethical and professional work practices and acting in the best interest of Tasracing and its Stakeholders at all times;
  • Managing workplace processes and procedures, identify and determine system improvements and the implementation of change management for racing opportunities;
  • Delivering the ability to educate and train employees and ensure all aspects of training programs are current and accurate;
  • Complying with all work health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with current legislation.

To be considered for this role you will have:

  • Demonstrable record of achievement in management at a senior level in a commercial and/or racing organisation;
  • Experience in effectively managing a team of direct reports State wide;
  • Professional level financial accumen with the ability to interpret financial principles and implement budgeting and reporting requirements;
  • Understanding the framework in which the racing industry operates, including familiarity with compliance, procedures and guidelines;
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills including the ability to prepare clear and concise Board level reports, and provide feedback to the Executive team and other key stakeholders as required;
  • Contemporary knowledge of the Workplace Health & Safety Act and Regulations;
  • Ability to assess and meet the demands of changing priorities;
  • High level computing skills and understanding of relevant software applications;
  • Hold a Class (C) Driver's licence;
  • Availability to commence ASAP for a period of 4 months, with the possibility of extension;
  • Degree level qualification desirable;
  • Understanding of the rules of racing in all three codes desirable;

Some work outside normal business hours, and the ability to travel across the State of Tasmania will be necessary to undertake the duties of this role. Part time and full time preferences will both be considered.
