The Derwent Sailing Squadron Inc (DSS) was founded in 1906 and is located in Sandy Bay, Hobart, overlooking the River Derwent.  The Squadron has a long and proud history, with a passion for the sport of sailing and conducts a comprehensive calendar of racing.  The Squadrons facilities comprise of a comfortable members' clubhouse incorporating members’ lounge, restaurant, function facilities and associated amenities as well as a modern marina, the largest in Tasmania, hard–stand and slipway facilities, and trailer boat launching facilities located within the Club grounds.

The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to manage, organise and oversee all on-water keelboat and one design racing and related events at the DSS as well as manage the Squadrons marina and boat services operational sections.   Reporting to this position are team members responsible for boatyard and marina operations and this team provides leadership, support and services that allow the DSS to operate and provide an outstanding level of service to its members. 

The Person

The Sailing Operations Manager should be a leader who has worked within a Club or membership based environment, with direct responsibility for managing sailing race operations.  The successful applicant will have a solid knowledge of racing rules, course setting, water safety and related race management matters, attention to detail and a common-sense approach when dealing with members in the coordination and running of yacht racing events. 

It is also imperative that the Sailing Operations Manager understands the nature of the marine assets of the Club, which include the marina and boatyard, and how to best steward and leverage these assets to the benefit of the members.  

The position deals with many stakeholders on a day-to-day basis.  As such, applicants need to possess great communication skills and be highly professional and courteous, exhibiting personal characteristics such as honesty, integrity and humility in all of their interactions. They will have a transparent and open communication style and relate to people at all levels by building trust, being self-aware and inspiring both individuals and teams to perform to their full potential.

Key Skills Include:

  • A dynamic, proactive, creative team player;
  • Have a high level of management experience;
  • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders effectively;
  • Strong understanding of race management including sailing instructions, notice of race and race compliance;
  • A comprehensive understanding of club dynamics with volunteers, staff and members;
  • An understanding of marine infrastructure management, including asset management, maintenance management and fleet structure;
  • Computer skills and familiarity with web-based systems;
  • Strong organisational and administration skills with attention to detail;
  • Excellent customer service; and
  • A suitable tertiary qualification or demonstrated longevity in a similar role.

This is a full time role, requiring weekend work, consistent with the Squadrons sailing program, as part of the normal roster and the successful applicant will need to be flexible with their working arrangements.  The successful applicant will work in a friendly and supportive environment in a prime location on Hobarts Derwent River. We are seeking applicants with an intimate knowledge of keelboat racing and the fundamentals of sailing, boats and marine infrastructure in general. 

The successful candidate will report and be directly accountable to the General Manager and works collaboratively with other staff, the Vice Commodore and the Board of Directors.
