Burdekin Productivity Services (BPS) is located in Ayr and is looking to employ a permanent extension officer to deliver technical support to sugarcane growers. The role involves delivering advice and agronomic support to improve productivity and profitability outcomes for growers by utilising precision agriculture practices, geographic information systems and technology such as drones, remote sensing, communication networks and automation of irrigation.
North Queensland is a great location and the sugarcane industry offers many opportunities. With plentiful irrigation supplies and excellent climate, the Burdekin region will always have a strong focus on agriculture. BPS has a team of experienced extension and field staff and a strong focus on staff development, education and support.
The role will involve 4 key areas:
- Deliver Precision Ag, GIS and GPS solutions to BPS members that benefit their farming operations
- Manage and develop the BPS LoRaWAN network to allow real time sensing, monitoring, record keeping and automation of irrigation
- Use drone and/or remote sensing technology to provide information that identifies variance within a farm or block, and suggest opportunities for managing variability and improving farm performance
- Maintain relationships with all sectors of the industry to ensure a partnership approach to delivering technological extension services.
A key focus of the position is to communicate and engage with local growers through one on one and group extension processes. There is also opportunity to conduct extension activities in all aspects of sugarcane production.
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic and passionate about agriculture and have excellent communication and analytical skills. Tertiary qualifications are desirable (but not essential), and/or a background or experience in agriculture, farming or extension. Experience specific to sugarcane production is not a requirement. An attractive remuneration package will be offered, dependant on experience.
