Veterinarian

The Lost Dogs' Home is one of the country's largest animal welfare organisations, caring for more than 25,000 cats and dogs each year. We pride ourselves on employing qualified individuals who demonstrate a strong personal connection to animals, the community and the cause.

Our Vet team is seeking an experienced veterinarian who is looking to take the next step in their career. We are looking for a candidate who is willing to develop their surgical and clinical skills who enjoys working in a large team whilst taking on a variety of diverse responsibilities and challenges.  Working at the Lost Dogs’ home will allow you to make a difference to the animals in your care and to the wider community.

The role:

Our vets have the opportunity to work in different roles, both in the clinic and shelter.  We have a modern purpose-built veterinary hospital at Frank Samways Vet Clinic, providing full veterinary service to our adopters, foster carers and the public. In the shelter we are responsible for the care of thousands of dogs and cats each year, providing them with veterinary treatment and care that will prepare them for life in a new home. Our vets also work in our public outreach program – within the last year our mobile Desexing service has performed over 1200 surgeries in the North and West of Melbourne.

Our clinics are well-equipped with modern imaging and diagnostic equipment, fully equipped orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery suites, as well as a fantastic nursing team to support you.

This role offers opportunities for developments in orthopaedic surgery, advance soft tissue surgery and diagnostic imaging. An interest in animal behaviour would also be well supported. We have a close relationship with our local specialists who are just a block or two away.

We are looking for a vet with enthusiasm for best care and welfare of dogs and cats, whether or not there is an owner attached. You must enjoy discussing and sharing cases, supporting colleagues and driving standards of care in the team and organisation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • providing diagnostics, treatment and care to lost and abandoned animals at the North Melbourne shelter.
  • medical and surgical consultations and treatment in a private practice setting.
  • ensuring a high standard of customer service to all our clients.
  • providing guidance and mentorship within the team
  • contributing to effective communication within the team, including feedback at regular meetings, daily staff communication and problem solving

The successful applicant will have:

  • a veterinary degree eligible for registration in Victoria and current registration of good standing
  • 2+ years of experience as a veterinarian in small animal practice.
  • well-developed soft tissue surgical skills
  • strong clinical skills with up to date continuing professional development record
  • solid communication skills both verbal and written
  • highly developed customer service and interpersonal skills
  • the ability to work cooperatively as a member of a large team
  • sound emotional maturity and animal welfare ethics
  • strong leadership skills and ability to delegate tasks effectively
  • clear and concise written and verbal communication

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic career development and opportunities
  • Discounts in our vet clinic
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program
  • Access to the Foster Care Program
  • A unique and friendly working environment (surrounded by animals!)
  • Rewarding work with animals in need

If you have the skills, experience and maturity to be successful in this role, please apply in confidence by emailing [email protected], ensuring you provide a cover letter and updated resume in Word or PDF format. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] for more information
