The Diggers Club is Australia's largest gardening club with a substantial mail order business, four retail stores and two gardens.  Based on the Mornington Peninsula, this growing business requires an experienced Production Manager- Nursery to join its team.  This is a permanent, full time role which offers the successful candidate an opportunity to work with leaders in the field.

Reporting to the Plant Manager you will be responsible for meeting production deadlines and optimising inventory productivity in order to maximise sales.  The ideal candidate will have experience in running a commercial wholesale plant production nursery and be process driven.   

Key responsibilities include:

  • To prepare and execute the annual Production Plan for the Plant Department in order to produce stock as required for the annual Sales Plan
  • To ensure the highest quality standards are maintained for all plant stock
  • To manage the propagation and potting on of all plant stock (flowering perennials, herbs, fruit trees, seedlings and ornamental trees) in mail-order tubestock and retail formats
  • To ensure Diggers complies with all interstate and international quarantine arrangements
  • Ensure the gross profit margin for plants meets annual sales targets and improves with efficiency and productivity of the department
  • The establishment and management of infrastructure to provide appropriate growing conditions for the production of all in-house production
  • Work in collaboration with Warehouse Department to ensure all plants are available for despatch when required for web and retail orders
  • Allocate staff and resources adequately to achieve priority tasks and be accountable for the wages budget of the Nursery Department.

To be successful in this position you will have:

  • Previous experience in a supervisor or manager role in a commercial production nursery
  • Advanced inventory management skills (high level Excel skills essential)
  • Knowledge of forecasting and replenishment processes
  • Proven planning and operational implementation skills
  • Strong analytical ability and financial competence
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written
  • Highly enhanced organisational skills with the ability to work to tight and conflicting deadlines
