Department of Agriculture and Fisheries / Charters Towers

  • Temporary full time until 30/06/2022 with a possibilty of an extension
  • Salary in the range of $58,573 to $74,967 per annum excluding superannuation.

 

Grazing BMP is a partnership between AgForce, the Fitzroy Basin Association and the Queensland Government. Following initial delivery in the Fitzroy Basin in 2009, the program was expanded in 2013 with funding from Department of Science to include the Burdekin, Burnett Mary and South East Queenland Catchments. BMP aims to assist graziers to identify improved practices relevant to their enterprise and strategies to implement them. Grazing BMP also serves as a reporting tool for the grazing industry, enabling it to demonstrate good land stewardship and animal welfare practices to the wider community.

 

Key duties and accountabilities (P02)

  • Enhance producer knowledge of landscape carrying capacity with particular reference to the ABCD land condition framework and associated tools to minimise downstream impacts to the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Delivery of the Grazing BMP Program including engagement of beef producers, development of technical materials and delivery of extension support activities.
  • Improve beef producer knowledge to efficiently manage and add value to their businesses by benchmarking and manipulating the significant drivers (branding, mortality and growth rates) within the production system.
  • Assist producers to develop technically sound on-farm projects and actions which deliver both reef water quality and productivity outcomes.
  • Contribute to the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of outcomes of best management practice adoption by graziers.
  • Develop communication products and extension messages from regional research and development activities.

Mandatory requirement/special conditions

  • A degree in Agricultural Science/Applied Science from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent academic qualifications in agricultural or animal science. 
  • A manual C Class Driver’s license is required.
  • Regular travel to other locations with overnight stays is required.
