Peel Zoo is a privately funded zoo and wildlife sanctuary. Our goal is to be the best boutique zoo in Australia. We strive to achieve this by making sure everyone who visits us has a unique and personal experience. Visiting Peel Zoo is a bit like visiting one of your own family, who just happens to have hundreds of pets. Breeding animals is a key concern for us. And, in that regard, our Tasmanian Devil breeding program is of vital importance. This species is endangered in the wild because of an in incurable facial tumour disease. We hope our efforts contribute to the long term future of the Tasmanian Devil.
About the role
Your role as the Zoo2U Wildlife Presenter is to travel to schools, kindergartens, birthday parties, aged care facilities and Corporate and Community Events teaching people of all ages about our wonderful native wildlife.
Due to the nature of this industry, the position involves weekend and evening work.
It is preferable that you are physically fit, agile, and a little fearless. An outgoing, confident person with the ability to communicate with all ages.
Preference will be given to applicants who have a Zoology/ Animal husbandry related background and wildlife industry experience. Applicants must have extensive general knowledge on Australian wildlife and have animal handling experience. Confident public speaking is essential.
Skills and experience
You will be responsible for:
All Incursions to schools, birthday parties, day and vacation care providers, corporate events, and other such external locations.
At times, Excursions to the Sanctuary from schools, birthday parties, day and vacation care providers, corporations, and other such visitors.
At times, Zookeeper 4 A Day bookings, guided tours, or similar mentoring, supervisory activities.
At times, public presentations at the Zoo
Animals involved in the above include: Snakes, Lizards, Birds, Possums, Dingoes, Tasmanian Devils, Invertebrates….
In general, providing an exceptional, customer focused, entertaining and educational environment for people of all ages and cultures.
Liaising with the Head Zookeeper on issues of animal health, conditioning, and training for all animals in the Zoo2U programme.
Ensuring all equipment used in the Zoo2U programme is maintained to workplace health and safety standards.
Following all safety procedures and policies to ensure a safe environment for guests, employees, and animals.
As a Zoo2U Wildlife Presenter you will need to possess the following:
Advanced knowledge of Australian natives and handling experience.
A focus on Health and Safety.
An ability to lead and develop team members under your direction.
A professional attitude and proven ability in following policies and procedures.
An aptitude for leading by example, self discipline, and conflict resolution.
A desire to be a conscientious and a reliable team player.
Excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads.
Qualifications & Experience
The applicant must have the following qualifications and experience or be willing to acquire them prior to commencement of work.
Zoology/Animal husbandry related background
Public speaking/animal presentations
Animal handling
Senior First Aid
Working with Children Certificate
Federal Police clearance
Drivers licence (with a clean record)
