South West Brisbane Community Legal Centre is a charitable incorporated association based in Inala, Queensland. We provide the Hub Neighbourhood Centre, a point of connection in the Inala community and we are a Community Legal Centre, providing free legal services to members of our community.

Purpose of Position

The community development worker will work from the Hub Neighbourhood Centre in Inala, Queensland.

The worker will use a community development approach to engage with and respond to community need in Inala and surrounding areas through:

  • the initiating, developing and supporting a balanced mix of community and centre based activities,
  • providing information, advice and referral, and
  • providing a supportive, safe, welcoming environment that promotes community engagement and connectedness. 

The worker will have a role in the general administration and daily operation of the service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with local community members, groups, and organisations to develop responses to identified community needs and facilitate delivery of a balanced mix of programs, services, events, and activities that promote community engagement and connection, particularly for those who are vulnerable or experiencing disadvantage.
  • Ensure the service meets the Department of Communities funded outputs as outlined in the Service Agreement. 
  • Promote, actively encourage and facilitate access to the centre for individuals, community groups, government and non-government agencies, promoting it as a welcoming and safe activity and meeting space.
  • Participate in and support community and professional networks which aim to identify and address the needs of local community members through collaborative action.
  • Work in close partnership with the Community Engagement Manager and stakeholders to ensure that Centre activities are relevant and meeting evidence based and agreed needs.   
  • Provide information, advice and referral services to community members by conducting needs identification, risk assessments, identifying referral pathways, and advocacy for individuals as needed.
  • Ensure staff, volunteers and service users of the neighbourhood centre have access to up to date and accurate information and referral sources about relevant community events, services and agencies.
  • Assist with recruitment, orientation, training, rostering, and supervision of neighbourhood centre volunteers and students as required.
  • Ensure neighbourhood centre program is operated within budget in consultation with the Community Engagement Manager and finance officer.
  • Collect and collate statistical data arising from community development activities and develop reports for the Management Committee and funding bodies as required.
  • Research and write submissions/grant applications to enhance opportunities for the centre to provide additional support programs and community activities.   

Organisational Duties

  • Foster a collegiate, supportive and productive team environment.
  • Act in a professional manner at all times while performing duties for and/or representing the Centre in line with the Staff Code of Conduct.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and report any risk management issues to the Community Engagement and Development Manager.
  • Participate in strategic planning and team building activities undertaken by the Centre.
  • Participate in professional clinical supervision – if necessary and in line with Centre’s policy.
  • Contribute to reporting and feedback procedures.
  • Take responsibility for a safe and healthy work environment and have a commitment to equal opportunity and a workplace free from discrimination and harassment. 
  • Ensure compliance with all Privacy Legislation and treat all information of a personal and sensitive nature concerning the business of the Centre and its clients in a professional and confidential manner in accordance with the Centre’s policies.
  • Ensure that all Centre’s policies, procedures, systems and work practices are implemented and adhered to, in particular, in human resource management, risk management, financial management, governance, procurement, and customer service.
  • Undertake other duties as directed from time to time by the Director and the Community Engagement and Development Manager.

Essential selection criteria

1. Tertiary qualifications in human services, community services, community development or similar with relevant and recent experience working within a diverse community setting.     

2. Demonstrated experience in identifying and responding to community needs utilising a community development approach, including program design, implementation and evaluation.  

3. Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of individuals and groups, to include all levels of community and government sector.   

4. Highly developed time management and organisational skills with ability to prioritise tasks, delegate work, and work productively with minimal supervision.

5. Highly developed communication skills that can be applied in interpersonal and group settings, writing of formal reports or funding submissions, along with social media and computer skills.  

6. Proven ability to work independently with limited supervision and to collaborate effectively with a team in the planning, development and delivery of a professional and holistic service to clients of the Centre.

7. Current Driver’s Licence and willingness to drive in the course of work.

8. A current Working with Children Suitability Card (Blue Card) or ability to acquire.

Desirable

1. Ability to work flexible hours, including evening and weekend work when required.
