About the program and partnership

MacKillop Family Services, in partnership with Queen Elizabeth Centre (QEC) and the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA), is seeking a full-time Therapeutic Family Worker for its Safe Early Years program. The Safe Early Years program ensures vulnerable families impacted by family violence have the support and skills to build safe, strong, nurturing, relationships with their children, so that their children are safe and can develop to their full potential.
 

About the role

Make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children and vulnerable families in this full time, 12-month contract position with the possibility of extension.

This role will be employed by MacKillop Family Services. It will be primary based at MacKillop’s South Melbourne office but some travel may be required.


Key responsibilities

  • Provide high quality, intensive, therapeutic family work to parents, infants and children who have experienced family violence
  • Provide a proactive and flexible engagement and assertive outreach strategies to create the best opportunity for ongoing participation
  • Conduct family therapy assessments and develop therapeutic treatment plans according to the particular circumstances and needs of the family
  • Provide ongoing and rigorous assessment of family risk, safety, stability and needs
  • Apply a strong cultural understanding and incorporate the principles outlined in the Aboriginal cultural competence framework when required and appropriate
  • Assess if safe to engage fathers and if safe to do so, provide flexible outreach and support safe and appropriate fathering
  • Undertake other duties as detailed in the position description and as required
  • Appropriate tertiary qualification(s); Social Work, Family Therapy, Psychology or equivalent; further post graduate qualifications are highly desired
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development and the issues faced by vulnerable children, young people and families;
  • Demonstrated relevant work experience in the areas of vulnerable children and families who have experienced family violence;
  • Demonstrated strong cultural understanding when working with Aboriginal mothers, families and/or children, maintaining and supporting connection to kinship, country and culture;
  • Proven ability to provide therapeutic individual and family assessments, development and delivery of effective strategies and treatment plans
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence and excellent engagement skills, especially when engaging children and young people who have experienced significant trauma, disrupted attachment and demonstrate extreme emotional and behavioural dysregulation.
