The Organisation

Our customer is a state wide not-for profit company is committed to providing a holistic response to the health and well-being of people who use illicit drugs including Needle and Syringe Programs, outreach, dual diagnosis counselling (Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug issues), support services, education and training (client and professional), clinical/medical services and other services that relate to illicit drug use, blood borne viruses, and other mental and physical health issues.

 

The Role

On behalf of our customer, we are seeking an experienced AOD Counsellor for a six month contract (with potential for extension) in Townsville. This is a part time role of 24 hours | 3 days per week. The successful candidates will work with clients of Probation and Parole, providing short to medium term counselling (4-8 weeks) to individuals who wish to reduce / cease problematic substance use concerns.


The purpose of this position is to respond to the complex needs of individuals through the provision of individual clinical counselling and therapeutic or psychosocial group work for clients affected by substance misuse and other related concerns such as or mental health. This position will be dedicated to the provision of alcohol and other drug counselling to clients supervised by probation and parole services.

The position will undertake all work functions in accordance with the organisations commitment to harm minimisation policy and practice, which encompasses a balance between demand reduction (e.g. treatment and other services intended to assist individuals to reduce and/or cease substance use) and harm reduction (e.g. Needle and Syringe Programs and other interventions).

 

Key Responsibilities

The Alcohol and Other Drug Therapist position will be responsible for performing the key duties outlined in their individual, regional workplans, however duties specified are the minimum requirement for this position and duties may change with the demands of the role.

  • Providing comprehensive alcohol and drug and mental health assessments
  • Summarizing outcomes of assessments at case conferences, and making recommendations based on these outcomes, including the development of treatment plans and referrals to other health or welfare services
  • Provision of brief interventions and short and medium-term counselling utilising established therapeutic modalities (e.g., Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Trauma Informed Practise Solution-Focused Therapy and/or Narrative Therapy) o Facilitation or co-facilitation of psychosocial education and support group/s.  
  • Summarizing outcomes of assessments at case conferences, and making recommendations based on these outcomes, including the development of treatment plans and referrals to other health or welfare services
  • Provision of counselling on an outreach basis

 

To Be Successful

  • Tertiary qualifications in Counselling, Human Services, Social Work or related field and/or extensive experience
  • Demonstrated experience and strong practice frameworks counselling to people using alcohol and other drugs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of factors contributing to substance abuse, implementing appropriate interventions
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication and engagement skills, building strong networks with stakeholders
  • Ability to relate to clients from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Open class C drivers licence
  • First Aid, Positive Notice Blue Card and National Police Check, or ability to obtain
  •  

Salary & Benefits

An hourly rate of $38.88 is paid | 24 hour work week. A total salary package of $26,000 is offered for the 6 month fixed term contract
