CatholicCare Canberra Goulburn has an exciting opportunity for passionate mental health services assistants to join our STEPS Program.  With an established team and on-the-job mentoring, you will receive all the support required. Successful applicants will have the chance to work with young people experiencing mental illness within a sub-acute residential setting, working in close partnership with the Child and Adolescent Mental health Services Team.

THE PROGRAM-YOUR TEAM

CatholicCare and ACT Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) work in partnership to operate STEPS. The STEPS Program provides 24 hour residential support to young people aged 13 to 18 years who have moderate to severe mental illness. The program is a step up/step down model working within a case management framework to assist young people to identify recovery goals and work towards these with their CAMHS clinician and their other supports, including family. The program services young people from across the whole of the ACT.

 

POSITION PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

As a mental health service assistant, you will:

support residents to access community, social and recreational activities;          ·

assist with self-care and personal domestic activities;          ·

assist with transport;          ·

skills development in a group and individual skills development;          ·

social skills development and improved daily living skills.          ·

 

Successful applicants must have a strong belief that all people can achieve outcomes, are values driven and contribute to their community.  You will be working with young people in mental distress. This position requires effective time management and administration skills as well as the ability to work effectively within a large team.

Selection Criteria

Relevant qualifications including a minimum Cert IV in Mental Health or equivalent plus one year experience.         ·

Experience in working with young people with moderate to severe mental illness, preferably in a residential setting         ·

Demonstrated understanding of mental illness and recovery principles          ·

Demonstrated experience in responding appropriately in crisis situations          ·

Sound written and verbal communication and IT&C skills          ·

Understanding of work health and safety, privacy legislation and mandatory reporting         ·
