Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries NSW (SMCNSW) is a community based, organisation, committed to serving the needs of our communities. Formed in March 2012, SMCNSW is responsible for the care and maintenance of Woronora Memorial Park (established in 1895) and Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park (established in 1893) and providing memorial services to the community.

Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park (ESMP), located in Matraville, is currently seeking an experienced Cemetery Operations Manager to join their team.

About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Operations Manager, you will be responsible for the efficient and effective management of the daily cemetery operations including Burials, Cremations and Ground and Garden maintenance.  Your main duties will also include:

  • Leading and motivating the operational Supervisors to ensure policies, procedures and staff work practices are in place and adhered to
  • Managing and lead change within the business
  • Implementing regulatory requirements and best practice
  • Creating innovative and cost-effective solutions/improvements to the business operations
  • Building/maintaining external customer relationships such as suppliers, funeral directors etc.
  • Providing on the job training and mentoring in operational standards, skills, performance, culture and values
  • Actively contributing to the operations strategic plan and budget
  • Working with the Supervisors to establish goals and targets for individuals and teams
  • Overseeing and assessing contractors
  • Reviewing the operations to ensure that ESMP can meet burial and cremation requirements both now and in the future
  • Working closely with the Maintenance team to reduce down time of equipment and resources
  • Working closely the ESMP Management Team and SMCNSW’s Senior Operation Manager to ensure SMCNSW’s image and service standards are consistently achieved
  • Establishing cost effective practices including purchasing, staffing and resources
  • Regular reporting including operational and board reports

About You

You will be a confident leader with a positive can-do attitude.  The key to your success will be your ability to lead, motivate and inspire your team and have a professional approach to your work. You will have a passion for excellence and strive to exceed customer expectations in a sometimes difficult and sensitive environment.  You will also:

  • Hold Tertiary qualifications (Certificate/Diploma/Degree) or Industry Qualification in Business, Operations and/or Leadership and Management or similar
  • Have at least 5 years leadership experience and expertise in operations 
  • Have experience in establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships, and achieving business outcomes
  • Have strong leadership and people management skills
  • Have experience in a similar or community-based organisation and/or a strong interest in the services provided by SMCNSW (preferred)
  • Be able to develop and implement operations plans, strategic plans and budgets
  • Show strong organisational and planning skills
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Show a high level of personal integrity, confidentiality and discretion
  • Be able to think outside the square for improvements and innovation
  • Be competent in MS Office Software
  • Hold a current Drivers Licence
