Permanent Part time 22.5 hours per week

We currently have a vacancy for a Support Worker at our Centennial Lodge Service in Cairns, which provides safe and friendly short-term accommodation for people experiencing homelessness, along with support to find secure and sustainable housing.

About the Opportunity

Support workers contribute to the welcoming, supportive and safe environment at Centennial Lodge. They provide information and encouragement to residents, assistance with practical tasks, and offer person-centred support in line with the mission of The Salvation Army.

This position works alongside people to address barriers to achieving independence and secure, sustainable housing. Support Workers work in partnership with a Case Management Team to help identify and negotiate supports alongside people. This position may be required to provide life skills training programs to the residents, as well as practical duties to maintain the operations of the centre.

Requirements 

  • An appreciation of and the ability and willingness to promote and support - the values and ethos of The Salvation Army.
  • Tertiary qualifications within Community Services, Social Work or similar discipline, or relevant experience with a minimum of Certificate IV qualifications.
  • Ability to engage with people appropriately across a range of cultures.
  • Flexibility to undertake rotating shift work, including weekend and night shifts.
  • Current First Aid/CPR Certificate and Driver’s license.
  • Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card) or ability to obtain.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with unpredictable situations and behaviour, violence and problems associated with homelessness, substance abuse and psychiatric conditions.
  • Good presentation and communication skills to be able to interact positively with a variety of people.
  • Sound computer literacy and capacity to use online services. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality client service and continuous improvement strategies.
  • Desirable that the successful applicants have an understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness, substance abuse, and psychiatric conditions.
  • Team player, flexible with a positive attitude.
