About the program

This position is situated within Family Services, which forms part of the Community Programs Division within MacKillop.  Family Services provides a range of family support services and parenting education services and operates from two primary sites in Footscray and Melton.

About the role

The Family Preservation Service Case Manager is responsible for providing high quality, intensive and effective case work for vulnerable children, young people and their families within the Western Metro and Brimbank Melton Regions with the aim of stabilising families to better meet the needs of their children.

This is a fixed-term, part-time (0.4 EFT, 30.4hours/fortnight) position, with the intended start date of 7 August 2018 and an intended end date of 30 June 2019.

This position reports to the Coordinator Specialist Family Services, and will be primarily based in our Footscray office. Some travel may be required.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide a professional and developmentally appropriate casework service, in accordance with the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005, and DHHS Best Interests Framework.
  • Deliver the service utilising relevant clinical approaches and frameworks, e.g. Trauma-informed; Family Systems and Attachment.
  • Ensure a high quality, intensive, service is delivered to clients, and that appropriate protocols and client information systems are maintained as per Funding Agreement and MacKillop requirements.
  • Undertake active engagement strategies to link clients into the program and ensure their continuing engagement with the program.
  • Deliver the service via regular outreach visits to the family home or appropriate community area.
  • Initiate and coordinate internal and external case assessments, planning and review processes and care team meetings as required.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with DHHS, Child Protection and other community stakeholders and relevant agencies.
  • Facilitate group work programs as required.
  • Support Coordinator to provide information and data to Mackillop, and funding bodies as required.

About you

To be successful in this position, you will have:

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with complex families.
  • Well-developed clinical knowledge relating to relevant theoretical frameworks; e.g. attachment theory, child development, family systems theories and approaches and knowledge of relevant evidence based interventions for working with complex families.
  • Well-developed skills in assessing risks, needs and safety for children, young people and families.
  • A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children, young people and their families.
  • High level casework and time-management skills.
  • Capacity to engage with and relate to vulnerable children, young people and their families.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, negotiation, written, verbal and computer skills.
  • Sound knowledge of the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005, and the DHHS Best Interests Policy and Framework.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop collaborative relationships across professional and organisational boundaries.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Support for the Mission and ethos of Mackillop.

Highly Desirable Criteria

  • Eligibility for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) or Australian Psychological Society (APA).
  • Child Protection experience.
  • Experience with Children’s Court system.
