Program Description:

The Family Support and Advocacy Team assists young women who are aged twenty five years and under pregnant and/or parenting, their partners and children in the Brisbane City Council region. We recognize issues related to health, social isolation, employment, education, income and housing are interconnected and solutions require an integrated approach.

The Family Support Team provides planned support through outreach strategies to families who are referred because they have high and complex needs, contact with the Department of Child Safety or because they are unable to access other services in the community. The Family Support Team work alongside these families to improve family functioning, encourage positive parent-child interactions and build connection for young families to their local community. The team also advocate with families through the systems which significantly impact on their lives, such as child protection, family law, domestic violence orders, justice, income support, education, housing and healthcare. We work in partnership with the Mater Mothers Hospital in the provision of integrated support.

The program provides a two generation approach meeting the needs of the parents and the children together and using Parent as Teachers (PAT) as the service model.

‘Parents as Teachers’ is an evidence-based model that works with parents with children aged 0-5 years providing an early childhood home visiting program as well as group connections designed to support parents around child development, parent child interactions and family functioning.
