The Role…

Based in North Brisbane, you’ll be responsible the direct mentoring and support of mothers residing in the Intensive Support House (ISH). This includes ensuring mothers are provided with a safe and supportive environment, where they are given the opportunity to learn safe and appropriate parenting practices to meet the protective needs of their babies. In addition, this role includes ensuring the efficient operation of the house in the program and supervision of support staff. In summary you will:

  • Support and provide opportunities for life and personal skill development for clients by role modelling completion of practical tasks, such as cooking, appropriate interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Undertake rostered shifts in the New Families Program Intensive Support House (ISH) as required and ensure the efficient and effective operation of the house. Standard Coordinator hours are 7:30am – 5:00pm four days per week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays).
  • Provision of direct support, education and guidance to residents of the ISH to assist mothers to develop appropriate and safe parenting practices in order to meet the daily care and protective needs of their babies.
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date knowledge is maintained and utilised in the program in relation to safe parenting practices based on contemporary research, literature and parenting practices within the child and maternal health field.
  • In conjunction with the Caseworker, contribute to the development of the Support Plans and support staff to implement these within the program.
  • Maintain the day-to-day operation and ambience of the ISH, including maintaining the physical and emotional ambience of the home and undertaking household chores, as required.
  • Maintain, and be accountable for, program resources including staffing, house maintenance, and monetary resources in line with Mercy Community’s delegations framework.
  • Provision of leadership including regular supervision and support, in addition to rostered on-call support to the Family Support Workers.
  • Oversee the effective management of critical and non-critical incidents in line with organisational and legislative requirements.

About You…

  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Behavioural Sciences, Psychology, Nursing or related discipline. Midwifery qualifications are considered beneficial.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with families and babies, particularly in relation to the development of safe parenting practices.
  • Previous experience in development of an effective team with a culture of high performance.
  • Demonstrated intermediate ability to use computer IT systems including MS Word and Excel.
  • Queensland Provisional Green or above Driver Licence.
  • Ability to obtain positive notice in the Working with Children Check (Blue Card) and any other legislatively required personal history screening as required.
  • Evidence of current vaccination against whooping cough or willingness to obtain prior to commencement, unless applicable exemption provided as per the relevant MC procedure.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting the client group, including child protection issues, family breakdown, domestic violence, adolescent and child development, homelessness and substance abuse (Beneficial).
