Kurbingui Youth Development Ltd (Kurbingui) is a not-for-profit community service organisation that supports around 13,600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – approximately seven per cent of Queensland's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population – living in the greater Brisbane, Moreton Bay ans South East Regions. Kurbingui has a solid footprint throughout these regions, which began in 2001 with the delivery of various community services covering area such as employment and training, family support, domestic and family violence, alcohol and substance abuse, cultural education and engagement programs, education support for families and children from preschool to tertiary, recreation and sports, early years, youth, women's and men's programs and cultural group activities, and health and nutrition.

Yeaca Dhargo Family Wellbeing Service - Brisbane North

The service model is centred around the Family Led Decision Making Framework which focuses on the family's story, knowledge, expertise and vision to develop a single case plan. Our team comprises staff with expertise across mental health, domestic and family violence, group engagement, FLDM, child protection and early childhood to allow the broad range of family needs to be addressed and supported.

The service response centres on a genuine family-led decision making process involving family, Elders and community (where appropriate) to set the path for positive outcomes. The model appropriately steps families up or down through levels of intervention across the continuum of tertiary to universal family support and acknowledges the important role of community Elders and other support services to nurture and heal families. The service will utilise strong existing partnerships and referral pathways with services and support networks across the catchment.

The Role

The primary purpose of the Family Wellbeing Practitioner is to provide quality culturally appropriate professional case management and case work to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families who are accessing the service. This is achieved through offering support, facilitating practical intervention and prevention techniques and strategies from a cultural strength-based and family-led decision-making approach that enhances an individual's capacity and empowers families to sustain positive changes with their parenting and overall relationships.

To be successful in the role, you will have:

• Qualifications an/or equal professional experience in psychology, social work, community services, youth work, early childhood with a focus on child protection
• First Aid and CPR
• Current Drivers Licence (QLD)
• Ability to obtain positive notice in the Working with Children Check (Blue Card), undergo and police check and any other legislatively required personal history screening as required
• Ability to develop and demonstrate constructive working relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, parents and families as well as other community members
• Ability to liaise and work collaboratively with relevant Government and non-Government organisations
• Sound knowledge of child development and an understanding of developmental milestones including cultural development
• Sound knowledge of the community service sector specific and suitable to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander families
• Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in relationship-based therapeutic family support
• Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organise and coordinate own workload with colleagues within the service
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement case plans
• Demonstrated ability to provide information, referral pathways and advice to families specific to their circumstances that is sound, accountable and accepted
• Demonstrated knowledge of culturally appropriate strength-based approach within a family support context
• Effective communication skills – written, verbal and interpersonal
• Demonstrated competence in use of business technology, internet and desktop applications. For example, MS Outlook, Word, Excel spreadsheets and database packages

Selection Criteria:

1. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and their cultures, and a general understanding of the issues that are affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary Australian society.
2. Highly developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, consultation, negotiation and liaison skills (especially in relation to Indigenous families and communities) including the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
3. Demonstrated experience in working effectively with families, children and external sources/agencies.
4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in the delivery and support of early intervention.
5. Demonstrated high level, or ability to acquire, understanding of child protection in Queensland including the significance of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principles, relevant legislation, policies and practices in relation to the role of Support Workers.
6. Demonstrated time management skills, with ability to balance and prioritise various client engagement, administrative and reporting requirements including use of various databases.
7. Willing and able to work within a cultural competent context and Kurbingui Youth Development's mission, vision and values.
8. Additionally, please outline your exposure, expertise and/or skills in EACH of the following areas (in any industry):
   • mental health
   • domestic and family violence
   • group engagement
   • FLDM (family-led decision-making)
   • child protection
   • early childhood
