Summary of Program and its objectives

This program is delivered through an organisation that exists to engage with individuals and communities to empower them and build their capacity through providing services, advocacy and community regeneration. 

The Project target group is children and young people aged 10-14 years who are severely disengaged from school (either not enrolled, or attending less than 50% of the time).

The purpose of the Project is to assist these children and young people to return into main-stream school on a full-time basis, within the standard classroom setting.

The methods by which this will be achieved are:

  • Establishment of relationships with the participant by a specialist team which works collaboratively to facilitate their gradual re-entry into the classroom over two terms (or up to one school year in special circumstances);
  • An individual learning plan that has academic and non-academic goals such as participation in community activities and volunteer positions in the local community;
  • Individual therapeutic sessions to help the participant to develop an understanding and skills in regulating their emotions, cognitive behavioural therapy to develop pro-social thoughts and behaviours to improve their problem-solving, social skills and behaviours;
  • Engagement with parents to assist them to support the participant to address their educational needs and the barriers to full participation in school;

These activities will be held on school grounds, to help the student to develop an identity with said school. 

 

Main Responsibilities of the role

The Project Manager is responsible for providing overall management of the project in order to asses and accept young people into the program and undertake outreach to engage with the young people to facilitate their entry into the project. This position is responsible for the management of the staff team (Family Therapist, Teacher, Youth Development Officer) and works with the team to help develop and implement a plan for each young person in accordance with the project objectives.

To meet the selection criteria, the successful candidate will require;

Essential

  • a track record in leadership in an education setting, and/or Tertiary qualifications in Education, Psychology/Mental Health, Welfare/Counselling
  • experience in effective leadership and management of projects/services
  • well-developed interpersonal and verbal skills to build effective relationships with young people, school staff and key stakeholders
  • ability to work in a structured and accountable manner, with outstanding record keeping skills
  • well-developed written skills including an ability to prepare reports
  • ability to identify and resolve problems and make appropriate recommendations
  • well-developed time management and organisational skills, including the ability to plan workload, prioritise and adapt to changing demands
  • ability to work independently and effectively within a team to achieve outcomes
  • demonstrated knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and Outlook

  • Experience or understanding of providing education on emotion regulation;

This is a full time position working 38 hours per week or 40 hours per week on the ADO system. Attractive salary packaging options are available.

This role is initially for 6 months, however there is the potential for the contract to be extended for an additional 2 years.
