The purpose of the role is to provide high level of professional, leadership and management support to Disability Advocacy NSW via supervision and support of Regional Coordinators and Team Leaders to ensure the service is highly functional and proactive. 

The Advocacy Manager based in Newcastle NSW is the professional leader and coordinator of Disability Advocacy NSW (DA).  DA’s main work is individual advocacy, however, we also participate in other smaller strategic projects to obtain outcomes for people with disability e.g. systemic advocacy and education.  

Your major responsibilities will include:

PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT SUPPORT

  • Manage the day to day delivery of disability advocacy services through a team of Regional Coordinators and Team Leader
  • Supervise and support Regional Coordinators (via teleconference, videoconference, and travel to face to face meetings)
  • Work with Intake Team Leader to monitor the intake of new clients
  • Assist with recruitment of DA advocacy staff when required

INDIVIDUAL ADVOCACY AND ADVICE

  • Carry a small individual advocacy caseload to ensure ongoing skills, experience and knowledge in advocacy and as a result provide well informed support to Regional Coordinators and Team Leader
  • Provide back up to Regional Coordinators with case advice to Advocates in complex or ethically difficult cases

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND QUALITY ASSURANCE

  • Review and update the DA Practice Manual quarterly
  • Maintain the quality assurance and continuous improvement register by undertaking regular reviews and evaluations
  • Work closely with the Executive Officer-Social Advocacy to prepare for third party verification audits
  • Work closely with the Executive Officer – Social Advocacy to ensure operational systems work smoothly and meet the needs of clients and advocacy staff (e.g. client management system, intake system)

MANAGE CLIENT CONSULTATION, FEEDBACK AND COMPLAINTS

  • Manage DA consultations, client feedback and complaints in accordance with DA policy and procedure
  • Use client feedback both positive and negative as a key input into service improvements

COORDINATION OF SYSTEMIC ADVOCACY

  • Coordinate the systemic advocacy activities of the organisation in line with resources available
  • Assist regional advocacy teams to research, identify, prioritise, plan and monitor systemic advocacy actions

Carry out other appropriate tasks as directed by the Executive and Management team including compliance with all aspects of NSW and Commonwealth Disability Acts.

Essential

  1. Relevant experience and tertiary qualifications (e.g. Management, Law, Social Work, Psychology, Social Sciences)
  2. Hands on experience in a leadership role ideally within the advocacy sector
  3. High emotional intelligence and a focus on employee engagement
  4. High level of oral and written communication skills, good organisational skills and good interpersonal skills
  5. Knowledge of the National Disability Insurance Scheme
  6. Knowledge of services and resources relevant to people with disability

Desirable

A current drivers licence or other reasonable form of transport

Conditions

  • Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHADS),   Pay point 8.1, 38 hours per week
  • Salary packaging options available within ATO limits and guidelines.  Tax free salary packaging options can increase ‘take home’ pay
  • Two weeks additional paid leave (in addition to 4 weeks annual leave) during Christmas / New Year office closure
  • Employment will be on a twelve to fifteen month contract basis
  • There is a six (6) month probationary period
  • You must undertake a criminal history check prior to commencement
