What do we do?
The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) was established to provide a coordinated and integrated approach to the planning, development and delivery of primary health care services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the South East Qld Region. The IUIH is a lead agency working in partnership with key stakeholders to support the effective implementation of the Council of Australian Governments ‘Closing the Gap’ initiatives.

This role: The position is required to support effective access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to available health care services in the designated region. This includes effective liaison with local Indigenous Communities/groups, identification of barriers to access, implementation of practical solutions and provide practical assistance to identified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to manage primary health care related needs.
The position will be responsible for:
- Establishing effective and continuous cooperative working relationships with Indigenous community organisations and document these organisations, the level of interaction and the occasions of engagement
- Initiating and documenting community events and activities, as well as participate in community events organised by others
- Establishing strong cultural ties and links with local communities to encourage and support the increased use of health services
- Promoting the services of partner practices at events and activities
- Personally registering new Indigenous clients per month for first consultations, with a special focus on potential chronic disease clients
- Collating and maintaining a library of relevant service provider related materials
- Developing and maintaining productive working relationships and alliances with identified GP clinic staff, relevant service providers, businesses and community organisations
- Assisting clients with attending GP consultations including first and follow up appointments
- Keeping accurate, current case notes, statistics and other client records and files as required.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Current Blue Card or willingness to apply
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Current C Class Driver’s Licence (QLD)
- Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care or Community Services; and/or relevant equivalent experience
- Demonstrated experience in engaging with community groups and individuals
- Ability to travel across South East Queensland as required
