About the Mill House Collaboratory:

The Mill House dual goals are to provide pro and low-bono professional services advice to the community and to provide students with the opportunity to obtain practical experience. Students provide financial, ICT, and marketing services to small business clients (especially social enterprise and Indigenous businesses) under the supervision of both Mill House paid staff and volunteer practitioners.

Consistent with the aims of our social impact investment partner, the Collaboratory is particularly interested in creating a professional services environment that supports students from Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds based in the ACT and region.  Where feasible, this enterprise also seeks to make linkages to Indigenous professional services firms in other parts of Australia

We are seeking an individual to manage a low bono small business services clinic as part of the Mill House Ventures Ltd and to assist the Chief Executive Officer in relation to both subsidised and low-cost shared professional services projects.

 

The person appointed will:

  • Have some background in social enterprise;
  • Have significant experience in managing professional services projects;
  • Have a passion for working with Indigenous students, as well as others from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds;
  • Have some understanding of the challenges faced by social enterprise, including Indigenous businesses;
  • Provide an excellent service to clients and a stimulating learning environment for students.

Specific Duties:

Your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Project management of all clinic operations working closely with the student placement services (from across a range of institutions) and the supervising practitioners.
  • Development of the clinic with a view to maximising the number of student advisers involved and number of clients seen.
  • Development and implementation of the strategy on further growth of the clinic, looking at ways services can be increased to meet a need in the community, meeting student demand and gaining appropriate supervision for student’s work.
  • Development and implementation of effective policy and procedures to enhance clinic protocol and best practice.
  • Recruitment of external volunteer supervisors from practice to supervise the clinics.
  • Recruitment of student directors and provide ongoing guidance and direction in the administrative running of the clinic.
  • Holding regular meetings with student directors to ensure the smooth running of the clinic.
  • Recruitment of student advisers, with an emphasis on ensuring opportunities for Indigenous students.
  • Delivery of clinic skills training (and Induction) session to new volunteers.
  • Overseeing client intake, screening for suitable cases.
  • Overseeing and direction of offline and online clinic publicity including social media communications.
  • Overseeing the clinic relationship with internal and external supervisors.
  • Overseeing the document storage system and ensure students and supervisors are maintaining the electronic client files properly.
  • Interviewing and taking instructions from clients from time to time.
  • Supervision of more basic advice and services delivery from time to time.
  • Proofreading all proposals and advice letters before being sent to the client.
  • Collating feedback surveys at the end of the academic year.
  • Ensuring the Integration of the clinic with the Mill House projects, including the Social Enterprise Accelerator Program
  • Maximising the educational value of the students’ work in their respective discipline.
  • Promotion of the culture and ethic of pro bono among the students.

Other duties

  • Hold regular review meetings with student directors to ensure the smooth running of projects and to discuss issues that should arise and ways to solve them.
  • Attend University (ANU, UC, UNSW, CIT) open days/evenings and other marketing events.
  • Deliver presentations to prospective and new students to promote internship opportunities.
  • Undertake any other duties related to the post as deemed suitable or appropriate by the Chief Executive Officer.

  • Understanding of and commitment to the roles of clinics in the provision of meaningful work experience for students and improving outcomes for the community
  • Experience volunteering within the not-for-profit sector or providing low cost and pro-bono advisory services

Proposed Hours: Generally, 9 am to 5.30 pm, with one late night per fortnight required for a total of 37.5 hours per week.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a police check and maintain working with vulnerable people registration
