Background

Silky Oaks Children's Haven is a not-for-profit organisation celebrating over 70 years of continuous operations.  Our Residential Out-of-Home Care program provides accommodation services for children and young people aged between 1 – 17 years and staffed over 24 hours, 7 days per week, 365 days a year in partnership with the Queensland Department of Child Safety, Youth and Woman.  Our Residential Care properties are based in the south-east Queensland catchment area from Manly to Logan. The Role & Applicant

We are currently seeking experienced, client-focussed and energetic Residential Care Support Workers to assist with caring for and development of children and young people under the care of Department of Child Safety, Youth and Woman and Silky Oaks. Working in residential out-of-home care can be very rewarding, however can present diverse challenges. Due to this confronting working environment, a background in child protection or youth work is preferable.  We are committed to ongoing training and professional development of employees.  Our compassionate and proactive team are looking for people who have a passion for wanting to make a positive difference in the lives of children and young people.

Skills, Knowledge and Attributes

  • Minimum Certificate IV qualification in a child, youth or family welfare area or actively working towards obtaining qualification. 
  • Tertiary qualifications within social work, psychology, or behavioural science areas desirable.    
  • Experience working within a residential care setting with challenging behaviours e.g. verbal and physical aggression
  • Demonstrated knowledge and awareness of trauma and attachment frameworks
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team environment as well as individually.
  • Stable, assertive and flexible attitude with the ability to think quickly in varying environments
  • Ability to continue to remain calm and follow procedures when in crisis-driven situations
  • Effective report writing skills
  • Proficient communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with peers, managers and external stakeholders
  • Capacity to work Monday to Sunday working a variety of shifts including weekends, however predominantly afternoons, nights, and sleepovers.
  • CPR accreditation

Key Responsibilities

  • attend to the daily care needs of children and young people
  • work with moderate to extreme behavioural classifications
  • provide therapeutic support and guidance
  • capacity and commitment to work effectively with children and young people in a residential setting to achieve planned goals
  • facilitate the operation of the residential household including cleaning, cooking, administrative and other relevant responsibilities
  • support and promote social, emotional, behavioural and psychological development
  • work within a dedicated team to ensure consistency of care and provide support
  • maintain accurate records and the capacity to record objective and factual case notes
  • comprehensive communication and written skills and be computer literate in the use of Microsoft Office Suite

Applicants must maintain a valid Drivers Licence "C" Class (Opens)

  1.   A Blue Card (Working with Children Check) – Paid
  2.   A Dept. of Child Safety Personal History Suitability Check (LCS2)
