Position overview

The Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES) at the Australian National University (ANU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (Level A) in continental magmatism and lithospheric structure, funded through Geosciences Australia and an ARC Discovery Project. The goal is to constrain interpretations of seismic velocity and conductivity images from Northern Australia, and to provide a geodynamic context to regional mineral systems by placing quantitative constraints on the depth, melt-fraction and temperature of mantle-derived melts.

The position will be based at RSES, under the supervision of Dr Rhodri Davies. The successful candidate will work closely with the Seismology and Mathematical Geophysics Group at RSES, in addition to the experimental Petrology group. The appointee will also interact closely with Geosciences Australia, Australia's pre-eminent public-sector geoscience organisation.

The successful applicant will have a PhD degree in mantle geochemistry, geodynamics, or a related field. They will have demonstrated a strong interest in volcanic and magmatic processes as well as geodynamics, in addition to the capacity for inter-disciplinary research. Preference will be given to candidates with experience of: (i) calculating melt distributions from the rare earth element concentrations of terrestrial magmas, using inverse theory; and (ii) interacting with extensive geochemical datasets, via the Python programming language. Candidates should demonstrate an emerging/excellent publication record relative to opportunity.
