The Role
We are seeking a qualified primary teacher for a remote P-9 school within the Northern Territory, located 180kms south of Tennant Creek commencing Term III on the 23rd July 2018. The role is offered as a 12-month contract with a permanent opportunity for the right person.
The role is teaching a Year 3/4 class of varying ages from 5-8 years old who are grouped according to literacy and numeracy abilities. The majority of the children have learnt their sounds and are beginning to read short texts. Tuition is delivered via the Direct Instruction programme which has had significant positive impact on the children's learning. The new teacher would receive intensive training in this programme during the first week of Term III, as well as ongoing training and support provided by the school leadership group. Direct Instruction is used for literacy and numeracy and accounts for a good portion of the day. Other subject areas are taught after lunch during the afternoon.
Experience of School-Wide Positive Behaviour programme implementation would be a bonus.
This is a role where you will gain lots of experience and responsibility within a short time. You will form part of a close and focused team of educators lead by a dynamic and supportive principal within an innovative and highly supportive regional team of educational advisors.
There is also an opportunity for the right person to take on the role of Principal in late 2019. As well, there is a part-time position available for a teaching partner. This could become full-time in 2019.
The School
Classes in the school are small and there are 7 full-time teachers and 7 teaching assistants supporting each class. Currently, the teaching assistants are being trained and up-skilled to increase support to children and teachers.
The school's enrolment is about 90 kids (almost all indigenous) with variable attendance of 50% with the highest attendance during the wet season and lowest during the dry season when people are most mobile.
A key focus of the school is to increase attendance and to integrate the students' culture and language into everyday lessons to make it meaningful for them.
Location
The community is located 180km south of Tennant Creek, 22km east of the Stuart Highway. It is bitumen to the community which is served by a dry weather airstrip, a clinic, an outback store and a locally owned bakery. There is also an Arts centre and a Sport and Recreation Hall. The community is about 500 people with the school population about 90 children.
