About the scholarship

The Nina Westera Scholarship is being offered by the Griffith Criminology Institute (GCI) and School of Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJ).   The scholarship aims to continue the work of Dr Nina Westera - a notable researcher in the field of adult witness investigative interviewing and a valued colleague.  

The establishment of this Scholarship will continue Dr Westera’s commitment to improving police interviews with adult victims (particularly victims of sexual assault and domestic violence).

The scholarship will enable a student to undertake a PhD in the area of adult witness Investigative Interviewing with the Centre for Investigative Interviewing (CII) in GCI at Griffith University.

Duration and Value

The Nina Westera Scholarship will be awarded as a living allowance of AUD $27,082 (2018 rate, indexed annually) per annum, paid as a fortnightly stipend, for three years. An additional top-up to the scholarship may be considered for an exceptional student.

International applicants may be provided with a Griffith University International Postgraduate Scholarship to cover tuition fees for three years.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for consideration for award of the Nina Westera Scholarship applicants must:

  • Be commencing a Doctor of Philosophy at Griffith University;
  • Have completed a Bachelor Degree with Class 1 / IIA Honours or is regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment.

Applications are open to Australian Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents and International applicants.

In the first instance, interested applicants should submit an expression of interest (EOI) to Professor Martine Powell (whom will serve as the supervisor for the scholarship recipient) via email ([email protected]) by 5pm 31 August 2018, containing:

  • Short statement addressing your suitability for the scholarship
  • A brief CV
  • Research proposal
  • Name and Contact details of two referees

The preferred applicant will then be invited to submit an online application for admission and scholarship into the PhD program.

Closing Date

Expressions of Interest close at 5pm, Friday 31 August 2018.
