Serco Southern Queensland Correctional Centre is a new state of the art 404 bed male, high security correctional centre located at Spring Creek near the rural hub of Gatton, Queensland. We are a values-based organisation with the fundamental aim of making our communities safer and ensuring prisoners leave the facility as improved citizens.

Our operating philosophy at SQCC is to ensure that prisoners have to exposure to correctional rehabilitation and support and are better able to find work and positively contribute to the community upon release. It is with this goal in mind that we have invested heavily in our ‘responsible prisoner model’ and education, training, rehabilitation and reintegration programs, with a focus on restorative justice and community and social responsibility.

We currently have an opportunity for a Head of Offender Education who is responsible for the effective functioning of the Education Department. The Head of Offender Education leads the Education team with passion and commitment to assist prisoners and their families to make positive sustainable change. The Head of Offender Education holds responsibility for the provision of innovative, engaging and enabling basic education, vocational education and training, tertiary education programs re-entry programmes and support and community linked events and presentations. The position Reports to the Deputy Director, the head of education works closely with external stakeholders such as education institutions, RTO Industries, Universities, Transitions providers and community organizations.

Your key accountabilities will focus on maintaining, implementing and managing the review of vocational, educational and training programs in the Correctional Centre. The Head of Offender Education will need to have  a strong vocational knowledge to ensure compliance for training programmes. The successful individual will need to ensure they are fully aware of an ever changing adult education world and be able to implement innovative and sustainable programmes for a challenging population group. There is a strong need for audit awareness and ability to maintain and capture delivery of all programmes within the correctional environment.  The role also involves liaising with key stakeholders and managing specific projects aimed at building family links, accredited and non-accredited programmes and managing a multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will research and maintain knowledge of current and emerging trends and practices concerning adult corrections and the delivery of rehabilitation and reintegration services.


Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of experience in administration for monthly reports, proposals, and award nominations. The Head of Offender Education enthusiasm, commitment to encouraging lifelong learning in disadvantaged learners, a positive attitude towards prisoner management, commitment to providing a high level of internal customer service, above average organisational skills and effective time management.

 You will need to have the ability to cope well under pressure to meet tight deadlines in a changing environment with a high work ethic maintaining integrity and professionalism. Essential key strengths include excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to resolve conflicts; accuracy and attention to details; sound computer skills including intermediate skills in MS Office and excellent time management skills. The qualifications for this positon

  • A Bachelor degree or higher in education or Learning Development
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE)
  • Diploma of Management
  • Diploma of Training and Assessment (Desired)
