The Organisation:

Youth Off The Streets is a non-denominational community organisation working for disadvantaged young people who may be homeless, drug dependent and / or recovering from  abuse. Youth Off The Streets supports these young people as they work to turn their lives around and overcome immense personal trauma such as neglect, physical, psychological and / or emotional abuse.

It is our goal that these young people will leave our care drug free, with a high school education, living skills and a full time or part time job in hand.

Our Schools:

We know that when young people become disconnected from education, their futures are at risk. Young people who enroll in Youth Off The Streets’ schools work with us to change their lives.

Our schools offer young people the opportunity to go back to school and achieve either the Record of School Achievement or the Higher School Certificate. We equip our students with the skills they need to continue their education, undertake vocational training, or enter the workplace.

Youth Off The Streets operates five registered and accredited High Schools over six campuses.

The Role:

We are seeking an experienced School Manager to join our Chapel School at Merrylands.                                              

Chapel School, located at the Merrylands Campus is an accredited high school catering for students wanting to complete Year 9 and Year 10, offering a flexible curriculum that responds to the specific needs, interests and talents of young people who have been disconnected from mainstream education.

Some of the programs offered are Maths, English, Science, History, Geography, Music, Drama, Leadership, Food Tech, Visual Arts, Service Learning, Health, AoD education, Swimming and Sport. A counselling service is also available.

The repsonsibility of the School Manager is to create a positive learning environment for students and deliver key competencies in accordance with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) approved programs. You will take accountability to ensure appropriate boundaries and behaviours are displayed by all staff and volunteers who access the school and that all school staff meet the Australian professional standards for teachers.

This position reports to the School Principal and is a  maximum term full time position ending on 14 October 2019.

You will predominately be based  at Chapel School, Merrylands however some travel is required (training, meetings etc.)

Responsibilities of the position fall within these key areas of focus:

  • Initiate all intake interviews and referral meetings with students and their families so as to maintain maximum enrolments
  • Prepare all relevant information from the referral pack that meets the funding needs for SWD and NCCD
  • Ensure that enrolments coincide with anticipated budget of funding and staffing
  • Prepare all evaluations of funding for programs on your site in a timely manner
  • Ensure that teachers prepare bi-annual school reports in a timely manner
  • Ensure staff prepare all teaching and assessment schedules, programs for each class in a manner that will satisfy all NESA requirements
  • Maintain programs Scope and Sequence and Teachers Chronicle and record all lessons taught, student attendance, assessment results, and evaluations
  • Maintain an open presence with staff and students and be active during school ground supervision
  • Coordinate the monthly School advisory meeting to include all external stakeholders, community members and families.
  • Actively participate in extra curricula activities with the Craig Davis /Key/ Chapel /Eden excursions, picnics, trips to city, camps, Service Learning, sport and presentation night etc.
  • In consultation with the School Principal, develop and maintain a strategic plan for the School  including the establishment and monitoring of performance indicators
  • Ensure compliance with the Schools legislative and policy framework
  • In consultation with the School Principal consult, liaise and negotiate with internal and external stakeholder groups and institutions as required.
  • Ensure the effective administration of human resource processes for general staff including training and development, performance management and recruitment and selection
  • In consultation with the School Principal, oversee budget management for the School including preparation of short and long term budgets
  • Proactively source additional funding opportunities in consultation with the School Principal
  • Ensure all staff have adequate resources prior to the commencement of each term
  • Take responsibility for the administrative management requirements of the school
  • Maintain awareness and appreciation of the current academic objectives of the School

Selection criteria:

Essential:

  • Proficient teacher, registered with NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)( 0.5 teaching load)
  • Four year tertiary Qualification in Education
  • Special Education qualification and /or experience in an alternate setting
  • Record of successful teaching and integrated, flexible  curriculum implementation
  • Capacity to initiate and motivate improvement in high school education standards
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to facilitate implementation of educational objectives and NESA compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student welfare and benefits of transition from school to TAFE/work
  • Ability to work collaboratively and successfully as part of a team
  • Ability to  mentor and coach staff to increase and improve performance
  • Ability to implement equal opportunity principles
  • Proven ability to monitor, evaluate and adapt programs to meet identified outcomes
  • Full and current Driver’s Licence
  • Applied First Aid Certificate

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated well-developed planning, budgeting and organisational skills
  • Expertise and understanding for NESA compliance for School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, Vocational Educational and Training (VET), Externally delivered VET credentialing of students
  • Experience in maintaining current awareness and understanding of educational issues and trends and adapting education programs to ensure best practice in student education is achieved
  • Experience in preparing all documentation for Special Education funding including National Disability Data Collection (NCCD0; Students with Disabilities (SWD))
  • Knowledge of current and effective pedagogy in special education or in working with ATSI students
  • Experience in writing, implementing and evaluating educational programs and proactively engaging students in the classroom
  • Experience and capacity to lead the team in using technology effectively and creatively within the classroom to enhance and support student learning
