UNSW Medicine is a national leader in learning, teaching and research, with close affiliations to a number of Australia’s finest hospitals, research institutes and health care organisations. With a strong presence at UNSW Kensington campus, the faculty have staff and students in teaching hospitals in Sydney as well as regional and rural areas of NSW including Albury/Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.

The School of Psychiatry is widely reputed as the pre-eminent psychiatric research department in the country, and one of the leading university groups internationally. There are three government-funded Dementia Centre for Research Collaboration (DCRC) hubs. This position will be within the School of Psychiatry, faculty of Medicine, the other two hubs are located within the Faculty of Science UNSW and the Queensland University of Technology. The DCRC consists of a multi-disciplinary team and each of the three hubs also supports collaborative research projects through partner institutions. The DCRC offers established collaborations with internationally recognised research partners in Australia and overseas and a dynamic and collaborative work environment.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will facilitate research related to our hubs flagship program on Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). The incumbent will be responsible for leading the flagship program, identifying opportunities for collaboration and funding and assisting the Centre Director with other research related duties. This role reports to the Centre Director, School of Psychiatry hub and has no direct reports.

 

About the role

  • $73k - $96k plus 9.5% superannuation and leave loading
  • Fixed Term for 12 months from date of appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

Level A:

• Assist in the preparation and submission of papers for publication and design Powerpoint presentations

• Undertake literature reviews

• Assist in the preparation and submission of funding applications for new research projects

• Assist in the preparation and submission of Ethics applications and amendments

• Assist with organising and undertaking reviews of applications for research funding

• Contribute to the preparation of new projects and research applications for new funding

• Contribute to the management of study databases including checking of data completeness, quality and security

• Contribute to team building and culture at the DCRC

• Collaborate with other hubs of DCRC, NHMRC National Institute for Dementia Research (NNIDR), consumers and other stakeholders

• Perform other duties as directed by the supervisor

• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Level B (in addition to the above):

• Contribute to training and supervision of research assistants/students on various projects

• Develop, design, conduct and oversee research projects relevant to the BPSD Flagship Program

• Manage and conduct research Activities including preparation and submission of papers for publication and design Powerpoint presentations

• Prepare and submit funding applications for new research projects

• Prepare and submit Ethics applications and amendments

SELECTION CRITERIA

Level A:

• A Master’s or relevant degree in Psychology (or equivalent) and/or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or and experience

• Knowledge of dementia and experience in dementia care research

• Demonstrated high level of written and communication skills, with meticulous attention to detail

• Demonstrated evidence of research productivity

• Excellent computer literacy skills including experience with MS Word, Excel, Access and other statistical analysis programs such as SPSS

• Demonstrated skills in statistical analysis

• Commitment to dementia research

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Level B (in addition to the above):

• A completed PHD in Psychology (or equivalent) and/or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or and experience

• Significant track record in publication, presentation, and assistance in paper submission in chosen field.
