UNSW Medicine is a national leader in learning, teaching and research, with close affiliations to a number of Australia’s finest hospitals, research institutes and health care organisations.  With a strong presence at UNSW Kensington campus, the faculty have staff and students in teaching hospitals in Sydney as well as regional and rural areas of NSW including Albury/Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.

The School of Medical Sciences (SoMS) is the largest School within UNSW Medicine, and one of the largest at UNSW. The School is based largely within the Wallace Wurth (Medicine) Building on the Kensington campus, but also includes the UNSW Lifestyle Clinic on High Street, Randwick.

The Translational Neuroscience Facility (TNF) is a core neuroscience research platform in the School of Medical Sciences. The TNF broadly supports neuroscience research and advanced translational research training directed towards treatment of neurological disorders.

 

About the role

  •  $73K-$98K plus 9.5% Superannuation
  •  Fixed Term until date 30 November 2018
  •  Full-time

The Postdoctoral Fellow is responsible for providing scientific support to ELA funded research in the Translational Neuroscience Facility (TNF) directed a developing a preclinical gene therapy for Canavan disease.  The project involves the design and generation of viral gene delivery vectors, and development of a bicistronic strategie for a CNS-targeted gene therapy strategy in a mouse mode of the leukodystrophy Canavan disease. 

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in medical sciences or a related field with a background in neuroscience, or completion of a Ph.D. in neuroscience pending final internal correction and approval.
  • Extensive research experience in cell biology and animal experimental work.
  • Demonstrated experience in development of gene expression cassettes and delivery vectors.
  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative analysis of gene expression.
  • Demonstrated experience in primary oligodendrocyte cell culture techniques.
  • Familiarity with imaging techniques.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with relevant computing and data analysis skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary research team as well as independently.
