Are you looking for a new adventure teaching abroad?

Are you an experienced teacher of English and Humanities with leadership skills, seeking a HOD position?

Are you keen to make new friends and explore a different culture, as well as being able to travel widely during the 8-week summer break?

We are seeking a Head of Department for the Middle Years English & Humanities programme for an excellent Australian international school in a lesser known emirate in the UAE. The position commences August 23rd for New Teacher Induction with all staff resuming September 2nd for the official beginning of the school year. The position is a 3-year contract.

The school

With a student population of around 1300 across the Junior, Middle and Senior schools, the school has close to 80 non-Arabic teaching staff from a range of English speaking countries. As well, there is a large Arabic staff as the children are educated in two languages and two cultures. The school uses the Australian National Curriculum hence Australian teachers and teachers with experience teaching in Australia are ideal for this school. It's a select entry school that is oversubscribed. It has an excellent reputation in the area.

Students are more than 80% Muslim across 70 nationalities. Arabic is the first language of more than 50% of the children hence teachers with ESL training and experience are ideal. The school day commences at 7:30 and concludes between 3:15-4:15 depending on the day. Regular extra-curricular activities include Aussie sports and swimming carnivals and family bush dances. The school places a significant emphasis on sport for girls and boys.

There is a very high level of support for new arrivals to the school and a great opportunity for promotion into roles of leadership within the three -ear initial tenure. Many teachers stay beyond this time. This is a role where you will gain lots of experience and responsibility in a short time as part of a close and focused team of educators. The Head of Middle School describes the school as fostering a family feel amongst staff who often live and work together.

The role

The middle school comprises 370 students across Years 6-9 with a four-form entry at each level. Under the guidance of the Head of Middle School, there is a team of 18 middle school teachers.

The HOD reports to the Head of Middle School and works alongside the HOD for Middle School Maths, Science & Technology. The HOD will also work closely with the Director of Teaching and Learning and Director of Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting. There is a 0.5 teaching load.

The English & Humanities department comprises a team of 10 teachers:

  • 4 x teachers in Grades 6/7
  • 4 x teachers in Grades 8/9
  • 1 x Learning Support teacher
  • 1 x Art teacher

Each middle school year level has an all-girls class, a high ability class and two mixed classes.

Ideally, we are looking for someone who understands the explicit teaching of English skills - reading, writing, speaking and listening. Someone who can quickly adapt to the school's expectations of how to plan effective programmes that cater for a diverse range of learning abilities. Knowledge of John Hattie's Visible Learning would be advantageous.

You

You will be a teacher and leader seeking an exciting professional and personal opportunity. You will have a love of the outdoors and physical activity. You will be team and community oriented as well as self-sufficient, adaptable and resilient. You will be good in hot weather! Professionally, you will be a teacher and leader who values high quality planning, assessment and curriculum implementation. As well, you will enjoy team work and be willing to offer and receive feedback about how you and your team are achieving. The school strives for high standards of academic excellence and through the Australian Curriculum in conjunction with the local culture, aims to support the holistic development of each student. Most importantly, we seek teachers with an earnest desire to want the best for their students, who know how to develop positive relationships with all students.
