School Counsellor

We seek to appoint an experienced School Counsellor to provide individual counselling services to students.

The successful candidate will be a Registered Psychologist or a Social Worker eligible for membership to the Australian Association of Social Workers. The successful candidate will have significant experience working in an educational context or in counselling adolescents and have a genuine interest in being part of a school community.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide psychological support to students through individual and group therapy;
  • Develop strong rapport with students to overcome boundaries to counselling and establish an effective therapeutic relationship;
  • Assess and identify, when appropriate, for students to be referred to other agencies for further assessment or treatment and make this referral, develop and monitor support programs with staff when appropriate;
  • Conduct psychological assessments (including cognitive, behavioural and mental health) using the appropriate tools and prepare reports for internal and external purposes;
  • Facilitate access to and obtain assessments and documentation required for relevant funding applications.
  • Assist in the development and review of Behaviour Management and Individual Learning Plans;
  • Offer counselling, psychological support and/or referral to parents/carers of students to support their social, emotional and educational development
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation concerning students and provide reports as required for internal and external purposes.

The successful applicant will:

  • Hold appropriate registration and/or memberships e.g. AHPRA, APS or the Australian Association of Social Workers;
  • Be experienced in administering, scoring and interpreting cognitive, behavioural and mental health assessments, and report writing;
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the mandatory child protection reporting procedures and values that underpin a child safe organisation;
  • Have demonstrated capacity to engage students, parents and teachers in the counselling process;
  • Have demonstrated evidence based professionally informed judgment in dealing with sensitive issues;
  • Have significant experience working in an educational context or in counselling young people;
  • Demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents and other health professionals;
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding and commitment to the Mission of the Catholic School;
  • Be supportive of the Lasallian ethos of the College;
