This position will be working within Hunter New England Population Health Research Group (HNEPHRG) which is co-located and collaborates with Hunter New England Population Health (HNEPH), Australia’s largest population health unit to conduct applied chronic disease prevention and health services research. Collectively, the group publishes over 60 manuscripts per year, and have been successful in obtaining nationally competitive grants annually from the NHMRC or ARC over the past five years (totalling $15 million). The group also collectively supervises 20 PhD students undertaking complex interventions in a range of community and health care settings. HNEPHRG has conducted of some of the largest trials in the world to improve the implementation of health promotion policies and practices in community settings such as schools, childcare services, and sporting clubs, including Australia’s largest child obesity prevention program ($7million) Good for Kids, Good for Life. Interventions recently conducted by the research group been awarded a NSW Premiers Award for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity and a NSW Health Preventive Health award.

About the opportunity

Under the supervision of Dr Nicole Nathan the position will primarily involve working on a NHMRC funded randomized controlled trial (RCT) that is designed to test the effectiveness of a multi-component intervention to increase schools’ implementation of a mandatory physical activity policy as well as other school-based physical activity projects being undertaken in primary schools led by Dr Nathan. As these projects are at various stages of planning, implementation or evaluation the role will vary across projects so the successful applicant will be expected to lead and or contribute to; ethics and funding applications, resource development, intervention delivering, project management, data collection/ analysis, report and publication writing and dissemination. A unique aspect of the position is being embedded within a health service undertaking translational research and as such the applicant will be actively contributing to policy and practice relevant research focusing on implementation science.

Skills and experience

   Essential Criteria

  • A PhD in public health, education, psychology, social and behavioural sciences (or similar) or are due to submit within 3 months.
  • Evidence of a developing track record of research achievement i.e. peer reviewed publications, grant income, conference presentations.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing physical activity, nutrition or child obesity prevention trials in schools or other community settings.
  • Demonstrated skills in the collection and management of data and application of appropriate statistical methods.
  • Commitment to the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills including the ability to participate in a team environment and build partnerships with external or industry stakeholders demonstrating clear communication and mutual respect.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in adhering to workplace policies and procedures in the areas of work health safety, equity, diversity and promoting a respectful workplace culture.

  DESIRABLE

  • Skills in implementation science or translational research.
