Tinternvale Primary School is in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, bordering the suburbs of Ringwood East, Bayswater North and Croydon South. Currently the enrolment is 356 students. The multi-cultural nature of the school is a great asset, enriching the educational experiences of all students. The school is located on a spacious tiered site with natural vegetation a feature of the grounds. There are 16 permanent classrooms, a stand-alone Visual Arts room and Library. The Before and After Care facility (run by OSHClub) occupies its own building within the school grounds and is well used. A full sized Gym is utilised by the Sports program and holds whole school events. Attached to the Gym is a Performing Arts facility. The buildings are a mixture of open plan learning environments and traditional single classrooms. Our extensive grounds include a variety of areas for both play and relaxation.

Our staff team contains a range of expertise and they are very dedicated and committed to developing a learning community, which maximises the overall educational needs of our students. Student Wellbeing is at the centre of everything we do,  guiding us towards improved teaching and learning, building improvements for all students and teachers in all areas over the next decade, using current research, DET best practice and via the creative and innovative use of ICT. Staff plan together in teams using whole school programs in reading, writing and numeracy and the inquiry approach. The continued implementation of our Whole School Literacy Program has seen students become excited about reading and more explicit instruction based on comprehension strategies has seen a vast improvement in our results. The areas of Numeracy and Writing are the current focus of professional learning.

Our Annual Implementation Plan is implemented through a School Improvement Team, Team Level Leaders and the PDP process. We welcome Pre-Service teachers and see their inclusion in our school as a vital part of our learning.

At Tinternvale PS, we have high expectations of our students, both behaviourally and academically. We expect staff and students to uphold respectful behaviours at all times and for staff to work with children to ensure they behave appropriately. Student wellbeing is an important focus. All staff use Restorative Practices and Tinternvale has been a ‘KidsMatter’ school for a number of years. In 2018, our school community will undergo training in Positive Education to further enhance and strengthen relationships. Our aim is to provide a teaching and learning program of the highest quality, which continues to evolve as new educational issues challenge us. A positive approach to student management and the development of positive relationships within our school community are a critical part of our ethos. Our school values are Respect, Responsibility and Honesty. Our staff are responsible for providing a child safe environment in accordance with the Child Safe Standards. Under the Child Safe Standards and Guidelines, information may be collected from any applicant in order to establish their suitability for child-connected work.

The DET Values of Leadership, Human Rights, Respect, Accountability, Impartiality, Integrity and Responsiveness drive our daily work and relationships within the School Community.

We currently have specialists in Phys. Ed., Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Japanese and Science. Students are able to receive tuition in musical instruments such as keyboard, voice, guitar and drums. Currently the school has 3 choirs who receive explicit instruction from our Performing Arts teacher and regularly perform locally and Kinders and Aged Care homes, concerts such as Oxfam and Youth for Peace and Eisteddfods. All students have the opportunity to participate in the intensive swimming program from Prep – 6, incursions and excursions related to the inquiry topics and camp programs in the older classes. We provide many and varied opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills, both formal and informal. We also run a number of programs aimed at further developing students’ social skills and work habits.

We have an active School Council and the numbers of parents involved in our sub-committees and programs and activities is high.
