Altona College is delighted to announce that we are going P – 12!  The college will introduce Year 10 in 2019 and by 2021 we will enrol students from Prep to Year 12.  The Assistant Principal - Secondary provides a unique opportunity for the successful applicant to take a significant leadership role in the growth of our college.  We require a strong and visionary leader to develop our later years VCE, VET, VCAL programs and curriculum.  We have high expectations of our students to be the best that they can be!  Our current year 9 results are testament to this vision.

We are a vibrant, growing community of learners achieving strong outcomes for our students.  We value the relationships fostered with our families to ensure an ongoing and successful partnership. Students are supported to ensure their primary school years are positive, challenging and they improve their confidence about themselves, their learning and their interactions with others. A seamless transition occurs into the middle year’s secondary education and as we forge forward this will continue into the later years.

Our college programs and unique modern facilities build on the critical stages of learning development; Early Years Learning Centre - Prep to Year 4, where critical foundations for learning are established; Middle Years Learning Centre - Years 5 to 8 where students take responsibility for their learning and demonstrate their independence; Year 9 Leadership and Development Centre where engagement to school is strengthened through leadership development and planning for future pathways.  Next year we introduce our Later Year’s program 10 - 12.  We look forward to the successful candidate leading this exciting next chapter.

We know from research that the biggest factor in determining student learning is the quality of teaching in classrooms. Our teachers are learners too, they work together in professional learning teams to analyze and discuss student data ensuring learning programs are targeted to individual needs. We implement research based practices supported by an external consultant and in house professional learning and coaching.  Our college is currently involved in the state-wide Professional Learning Communities initiative setting a firm foundation for our future. We aim for excellence and commit to improve the learning outcomes for every individual. Technology is an integral part of our teaching and learning programs.

Role


The assistant principal reports directly to the principal.

Assistant principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.  In exercising the responsibility, assistant principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's strategic plan, policies and budget.  Assistant principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in policy formulation and decision making.

The management of significant school program or functional areas in schools involve assistant principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.

Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources.

Responsibilities


Typically, assistant principals perform one or more of the following functions:

   - supervision and coordination of the work of senior curriculum or level coordinators;

   - allocation of budgets, positions of responsibility and other resources within the area of responsibility;

   - supervision of the delivery of teaching programs;

   - management of programs to improve the knowledge and experience of staff;

   - responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers and year level coordinators;

   - contribute to the overall management of the school;

Who May Apply


Appropriately qualified individuals currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
