Accredited by AACSB, the Business School has over 4500 students and over 150 academic staff - and is ranked in the world's top 200 for Business and Management Studies (QS Rankings 2018).

Focussing on research projects that are contemporary and relevant to business and with close ties to international universities and research institutes, AUT's world-class Finance department is part of the AUT Business School and is seeking to appoint a new Director to lead the highly regarded Auckland Centre for Financial Research (ACFR).

The Centre aims to

(1) Achieve excellence in empirical finance and applied financial econometric research, and

(2) Bridge the gap between academia and industry

We nurture and develop world-class researchers, establish relationships with leading academics and centres/institutes in the field, engage and develop outstanding contact with industry and develop the research capacity of our postgraduate and PhD finance students. Our exceptionally well received annual conferences and events, as well as our very high standard of research, has resulted in the ACFR raising the profile of AUT internationally. The ACFR also produces its own journal - Applied Finance Letters.

The role

The Director of the AFCR will provide strategic and operational leadership for the centre. You will be able to conduct high-level scholarly research as well as translate and communicate research to wider society, communicating with industry and establishing examples of impact and analysis. You will continue to publish in top academic and professional journals and undertake media interviews and other publicity whilst working closely with the department. You will mentor PhD and post-doctoral students, and support the development of their research and continue the collaborative, welcoming environment researchers and visitors to the centre currently enjoy. The role will also still retain a limited teaching load.

The successful applicant will receive a substantive appointment as Professor of Finance*, with a 5 year secondment to the role of Director of the Auckland Centre for Financial Research, with a possibility of further renewal. At a later date, you may wish to engage with other substantial leadership opportunities in the Department or the Faculty.

Note: *In exceptional cases, an Associate Professor of high standing may also be considered for the role.

Our Department of Finance has an egalitarian and collaborative culture. A resolute, robust and positive attitude is essential. The following requirements are critical:

  • A PhD in Finance or a related business discipline
  • An outstanding research publication and impact track record with international standing
  • Research interests ideally in empirical finance areas
  • Previous academic leadership
  • Proven record of successful grant application
  • Proven connections and links to government, profession, and industry
  • Evidence of successful PhD and post-graduate supervisions

We are a focussed, open and collaborative group who support the growth of our people. We have a good research environment, share our expertise and time, and we offer generous support for conferences. The Faculty also offers a variety of contestable research funds.
