Position Overview

The role of the Student Advocacy Officer is to advocate on behalf of individual James Cook University (JCU), and the JCU student community, on a broad range of academic and welfare issues.

The Student Advocacy Officers works collaboratively with JCU staff and Student Council Office bearers to:

•       raise awareness in relation to advocacy, academic and welfare issues affecting students,

•       facilitate the resolution of student issues,

•       suggest improvements to policy and practice, and

•       deliver projects that enhance the student experience and promote overall student retention and success.

To be successful in this role the applicant will have completed a tertiary degree in law, social science, social work or other relevant discipline that pertains to peer advocacy.  The successful incumbent will be required to:

  • advocate according to the student's instructions; and
  • act as a support person for students during committee/panel hearings; assist and encourage students to be confident in raising and resolving issues, challenges and problems; support students during complaint processes.

Hours: 36.25hours per week, 8.30am – 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Employment status: Fulltime position on an annual fixed term contract (January to December) due to the position being funded by the Student Services Amenities Fee (SSAF) which is approved on a 12 monthly basis.  It is anticipated that the incumbent will commence on August 27th 2018, hence the contract would run from this date until 31/12/2018 with a continual annual renewal based on SSAF funding received.

It is a requirement of this position to possess or have the ability to obtain prior to commence of the position:

  • a Queensland Government Blue Card for working with children and young people in Queensland; and
  • a police check at the incumbents expense.

Selection criteria.

Essential

1. A completed tertiary degree in law, social science, social work or other relevant discipline that pertains to peer advocacy.

2. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in customer service and enthusiasm for working with and assisting various stakeholders.

3. Ability to utilise effective listening, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence and networking skills and strong verbal communication skills.

4. Excellent writing skills and the ability to assist students prepare and structure their written communications with the University.

5. Sound administrative, organisational and time management skills and proven experience in achieving targets and priorities under pressure.

6. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite of products and electronic client data management systems.

7. Ability to work within a small team environment and with capacity to work with minimal supervision.
