Mill Park Secondary College offers a Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Program for gifted and talented students, which begins in Year 7 and continues throughout their secondary schooling. The program caters for gifted and talented students who are characterised by an advanced speed of learning and a capacity for remarkably high standards of performance.

A broad range of extra curricula opportunities are available for students in areas including leadership, performing arts, sport and a variety of clubs.

Selection Criteria


KSC1    Appropriate qualifications in the areas such as Social Work or Youth Work and demonstrated capacity to effectively lead and develop programs for the social, emotional and health care needs of children and young adults  specific to the needs of the school community.

KSC2    Demonstrated high level communication skills in both verbal and written forms with highly developed organisational and administrative skills, including the ability to keep formal records and written reports.

KSC3    Demonstrated ability to lead a team including teachers, parents, students, other wellbeing workers and outside agencies to effectively support young adults within a school setting.

KSC4    Demonstrated empathetic and supportive nature in regards to the care management of students and parents, when working with both individuals and groups.

KSC5    Demonstrated capacity to respond effectively and promptly to crisis situations to support the child or young adult, family and other members of the School community.

KSC6      Improvement focused with personal qualities including perseverance, resilience, leadership, teamwork, respect, organization, problem solving, and communication.

Role


This role has management responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional support services.  The role will sometimes impact beyond the work area or professional field.  It seeks to gain cooperation of other staff members or members of the school community to achieve specific objectives related to student wellbeing.

The role requires specialist professional, understanding and expertise related to the tasks in the student welfare area and experience in monitoring work flow and developing local strategies or work practices including training programs for other staff.  The role allows for reasonable autonomy in determining work priorities and schedules.  At times the Student Welfare Officer will be required to act on behalf of senior management in the delivery of client services which will involve communication with parents, students, teachers, service providers and the wider school community

There will be regular consultation and liaison with the principal team. 

Typical Task Areas

The Student Welfare Officer is required to work cooperatively as part of a team, with other Student Welfare Officers, the Principal Class, the Year Level Teams, the Pastoral/Home Group teachers and other staff to implement a range of programs and interventions with students and the school community that foster resilience, improve attendance and respond to identified social, emotional and educational needs and ensure that the welfare needs of all students are catered for.

The successful applicant will collaborate with the team by:

Collaborating with school staff, Student Support Services and support agencies to develop and implement a range of programs and interventions with students and the school community that foster resilience, improve attendance and respond to identified social, emotional and educational needs.

Increase awareness, understanding and skills of staff in the school community in the area of student wellbeing as outlined in the Framework for Student Support Services in Victorian Government Schools, particularly primary prevention and early intervention.

Provide on the spot counselling and guidance to students and implement appropriate treatment programs through a variety of service delivery mode.

Refer clients to appropriate outside agencies and professionals as required.

Developing Individual Learning Plans for educational outcomes in collaboration with classroom teachers and parents.

Establish and maintain links with Student Support Services, school networks and relevant support agencies with a view to optimising and coordinating service provision to students at risk of disengagement from school.

Provide leadership in the identification and analysis of emerging student wellbeing issues and coordinate specialist advice on the range of appropriate interventions.

Actively participate in professional development activities and programs and share knowledge and expertise with other staff.
