Gembrook Primary School is located in Gembrook in the Dandenong Ranges approximately 50 kilometres from the city of Melbourne. It is part of the Dandenong Ranges Network with close ties to EDEC (Emerald District Education Community). The school participates in sporting and community events with the local EDEC schools - Cockatoo, Menzies Creek, Selby, Emerald and Macclesfield Primary Schools. The school also has strong links and extensive transition programs with Gembrook Pre-School, Little Gems Early Learning Centre and Emerald Secondary College. A before and after school bus service operates for around 30 students who live in the outer area of Gembrook.

Gembrook Township is a town in transition with land use for potato farming and flower growing and land is increasingly being sub-divided for residential use.

The school has strong links with local community organisations. The school has had consistent support from local businesses, community organisations and local environment groups.

The current enrolment is around 210 students. This enrolment number is quite steady. The School Family Occupation index is .48 and there are less than 2% students with Koori backgrounds. There are no non-English speaking background students. There are a small group of students on the Program for Students with Disabilities. The school provides classroom support and an extensive transition program for these students.

At Gembrook we value and promote the importance of the partnership between home and school. Gembrook has an active School Council and Parents and Friends Association. These groups meet on a regular basis each month. Both groups are involved in decision making in regards to whole school planning. They organise and participate in school social and fundraising events. Parents are welcomed into classrooms and are actively involved throughout the school in a variety of ways including, Free Fruit Friday Program, vegetable garden and produce market, and support in the Art room, Library and learning centres.

At present there are nine classrooms operating in three learning centres, the Junior, Middle and Senior Learning Centres.

Gembrook has full time classroom teachers including graduate, accomplished and expert teachers. Part time staff provide an extensive specialist program for the areas of Art, Italian, Physical Education and Library. An Educational Support Staff team support students learning throughout the school. Office staff ensure the smooth running of school administration. The School Wellbeing officer provides support for teachers, students and parents in relation to social and welfare issues.

Literacy, Numeracy and Science teaching and learning is a priority. Students are encouraged to actively participate in activities that promote team-building, creative thinking, problem-solving and a healthy life style. Gembrook Primary School is a five star sustainable school. The school uses the ‘Kidsmatter’ framework to support the emotional and social development of students. The school is an eSmart school. Cyber safety and care of technological equipment is promoted throughout the school.

The school offers students a variety of extracurricular programs including sports, camping, music – keyboard & guitar, performance, dance, HPV (Human Powered Vehicles), leadership programs including Student Representative Council and Eco Warriors. Grade 5 and 6 students participate in programs to develop their leadership and team work.

Role

Undertakes routine tasks that are usually carried out under close supervision and direction.  Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established and direction is readily available.

Work has little scope for deviation. Problems can usually be solved by reference to well documented procedures and instructions and clearly established practices.  Deviation from established procedures will require reference to others for guidance and direction.  Assistance is readily available when problems arise.  An experienced employee at range 1 will exercise limited judgement within clearly defined guidelines and well established practices that relate specifically to the tasks performed.

Does not carry responsibility for the work of others.  More experienced employees will provide basic guidance and advice to others relating to tasks within the work area.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.  Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Qualification requirements do not operate at range 1.  Certification requirements may be required to legally perform specific tasks - e.g. driver's licence, first aid, safe food handling.

Responsibilities


-    Assist students on an individual or group basis in specific learning areas.
-    Assist with the communication between students and teachers, particularly the interpretation of instructions.
-    Provide basic physical and emotional care for students.
-    Participate in team meetings.
-    Assist with toileting, meals, lifting, and administration of medication to students requiring special care.
-    Assist with the supervision of pupils in playgrounds, at camps, on excursions, in sporting activities, therapy activities and life skills.
-    Assist in the preparation of student resources and equipment.
-    Prepare basic curriculum support resources.
-    Set up and put away equipment and materials in support of teaching programs.
-    Observe students and draw the attention of the teacher to them where necessary.
-    Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of programs and evaluation of individual student involvement and achievement.
-    Assist with communication between teachers and non-English speaking parents/students.
-    Assist in the translation of documents.
-    Assist students with the preparation and service of meals.
-    Ensure work areas and materials, equipment and appliances are maintained in a clean and ready to use condition.
-    Assist in the preparation of equipment and purchasing of materials and supplies as required.
