Newstep is an enabling or tertiary preparation program for people aged from 18 to 20 years, who have not completed year 12 studies due to adverse circumstances or disadvantage experienced in their senior secondary schooling, or have completed year 12 studies but not gained entry to university.

About The Role

Our sessional teaching staff play a large role in contributing to the achievement of our strategic objectives, particularly our strong commitment to an exceptional student experience and our high quality innovative teaching and learning practices.

Their contribution to our success can be in many forms, including sessional coordination, lecturing, tutoring, marking, student consultations and other appropriate administrative tasks.

The English Language & Foundation Studies Centre is calling for expressions of interest in casual teaching in the Newstep program for Semester 1, 2019. 

Willingness to teach students with a wide range of ability, prior knowledge and preparedness for study is essential. Competency in the use of technology, a commitment to providing timely student feedback and accurate record keeping are also required. You should be prepared to work as a member of a team cross-campus as required and to use innovative and creative teaching strategies including on-line delivery.   

Applicants should also have experience teaching at a senior secondary and/or tertiary level in a lecture and/or tutorial format.

Please note: this is NOT a position in the Teaching of English as a Second Language.

Essential Criteria:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in one or more of the following discipline areas:
    • Academic Literacies
    • Australian Culture and Society
    • Film Studies
    • Information Technology
    • Legal Studies
    • Linguistics
    • Mathematics
    • Science
  • Experience teaching at a senior secondary and/or tertiary level with a sound understanding of pedagogical and/or adult learning principles.
  • Computer, administrative and record keeping skills (e.g. email, Blackboard, internet).
  • Ability to maintain regular communications and to meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to maintain high levels of professionalism, act with direction and maintain confidentiality.
  • Monitor student performance. Provide remedial instruction and individual assistance as required and according to the conditions of the contract of employment.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with a proven capacity to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in adhering to workplace policies and procedures in the areas of work health safety, equity, diversity and promoting a respectful workplace culture.
