  • $52,240 - $58,638 per annum plus up to 17% Superannuation

About the role

The role of Animal Technician, LARTF, will be located at La Trobe University’s Melbourne campus in Bundoora at the La Trobe Animal Research and Teaching Facility (LARTF). The LARTF provides state of the art facilities and technical assistance to facilitate and support the diverse range of research and teaching activities involving the use of animals, the majority of animals held are genetically modified rodent strains, primarily mice.

The main purpose of the position is to deliver a consistently high standard of animal care and research support under the guidance and supervision of Senior Animal Technicians/Supervisors.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Undertake general animal husbandry tasks i.e. animal welfare monitoring, cleaning of animal cages/ enclosures, provision of food, water and enrichment to animals
  • Perform all procedures and maintain rodent breeding colonies and experimental animals  in accordance with the Australian code for care and use of animals for scientific purposes and facility policies and procedures
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records and reports, including those for animal welfare checks, facility occupancy, animal breeding, animal health, adverse event and risk documentation
  • Provide technical support and assistance to staff, students and researchers
  • Engage with colleagues to promote an efficient team environment where tasks are competed to a high standard within requested timeframes

Skills & Experience

To be successful you will have:

  • Diploma of Animal Technology or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education / training
  • Skills and experience with a variety of animals used in research, demonstrating sound knowledge of animal husbandry, breeding, health and welfare monitoring, and technical procedures
  • Good communication, organisation, time management, and prioritising skills
  • Ability to produce accurate work with meticulous attention to detail
  • Demonstrated capacity to consistently undertake work to a high standard and work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • A positive attitude to work and a willingness to learn and contribute to continuous improvement in work practices
